Any newbies interested in testing out the water in a friendly, newbies-specific, all questions welcome setting, please join me at Columbia Beach on Monday, 6/18 at 6pm!
We will practice sighting, getting used to the open water, and turning around buoys. We can also address any other questions or concerns you might have. Please wear a brightly colored swim cap. This is something that all CTC members should remember to do for every open water swim for safety reasons. The water should be warm enough by then to go without a wetsuit, but if you do have one, you should bring it to practice getting in and out of quickly.
Columbia Beach is located in Bay Village on Lake Road. 252 (Columbia Road) dead ends into the park. You can park at the church and cross the street. Then, go down the stairs and we will meet you at the bottom landing.
You can't miss me--I'll be the one who's about 6 months pregnant. ;D
Hope to see you then! Please post with any further questions!

Is this the same location that Rob will be starting a regular swim workout? I definitely want to be involved in this newbie outing since I have never done any open water swims before, (though I am otherwise comfortable in the water, since I was a competitive swimmer in H.S.) but I need to get some experience before the Maumee Sprint on 6/17. Any advice? Enjoy your blog, btw. :-)

Ill be there for sure. I have a feeling swimming through the brown lake is different from sitting out behind the break waiting for a wave in the blue pacific like im used to

kfoster - try to get up to Maumee early and practice in the lake the day before the race.
Munroe Falls is a "local" inland lake that you might be able to go practice in as well, assuming Lake Erie does not warm up appropriately in time...

I was waiting to hear about a open water swim for Newbies and unfortunately I will be out of town on 6/18! Please consider having another Newbie swim in the future. Thanks - Carrie

Yes, this is the location that Rob will be leading the weekly swim workouts from. I'm sure we'll have some more newbies swims in the future, so no worries! Suzi's suggestions are great for anyone looking to get in before the 18th!

There is also a newbies specific practice at Mentor Headlands this Saturday put on by the GCT staff. I know this is a busy weekend, but if you have time, it is definitely worth checking out.
We'll have other sessions soon too. Stay posted.

I'm still concerned about the temp of the lake. I don't own a wetsuit yet.
Is it realistic to swim without one this early?

I've been in a few times in the past two weeks without a wetsuit...first week was chilly, but last week didn't bother me.

Hey Rob--I will be going without a wetsuit, since I can't fit into mine anymore! See how it feels and if you are too cold you can always bail. Kevin was a brave soul last week without one and he said it was fine.

Hey Newbies--I live so close to Columbia Park, so I'm going to throw some burgers on the grill afterwards. My house is just about 2 blocks away and I can give the details to anyone who's interested. I will also post on the Training section of the Club Forum so we can get some club veterans there, too! This will be a great time to mingle with new triathletes and seasoned veterans. Please RSVP below by Monday afternoon if you plan on stopping by so I know how much food to pick up. Hope to see you there!

I sent my check to CTC a few weeks ago, so I am a new member, as well. I will be there tonight for the open water swim. Sara - If you are still having a gathering after the swim, I can bring some ice tea and chips, if that will help.

Thank you Sara for having us over for some tasty food and leading my first swim in the Great Lake Erie. I assume your puppy is well hydrated today. Better he goes for the gatorade than the burgers :-) It was good meeting everyone that made it out!!!

Assuming your goal is to finish, have fun and try out the sport, the mountain bike will be fine. The swim may be an issue tho if you're not sure you can swim at least 30 lengths of the pool. The lake water will be dark, there will be a bunch of people around you, and it will seem like you're way out away from shore. If you haven't done ANY swimming yet I think you should seriously reconsider racing.

Can you swim? Come on down to Columbia swim on mondays @ 6pm and get a taste of open water swimming. People of all levels swim there.
Once you do that you'll have a better idea of what you're capable of.
