Pain radiating from the low back into the foot will be the sciatic nerve. Depending on how intense the irritation is, you may have numbness and tingling only, or sharp, burning, or shooting pain that is coupled with numbness and tingling. The nerve may be pinched or entrapped and depending on the severity can "disable" from a few weeks to a year or longer. In 2009 I pinched that nerve so badly I could not feel my left leg for well over 8 months. In June 2010, a year later, I still had residual foot-drop though I had regained the ability to run. I did not lose any conditioning in that leg due to shifting to body-weight exercises instead of regular weight lifting, yoga, and work in the pool. I was able to use the eliptical but not the treadmill as I had lost the ability to move at the sustained speed required. Now approaching 2 years post date of injury, my left leg still works harder than my right (though that is no longer necessary), and builds up a lot more lactic acid with training. Can you describe your symptoms in as much detail as possible? I can probably give you a better estimate from there. I you want you can just email me.

Dear Dr. Baker! Describe in detail! Do you really want to know everything? Well, it all goes back to racing Huntington Beach Du/Triathlon last July........... Its a great event! I was biking back into T2 and as I approached the dismount area, I had trouble getting off the bike and ended up flat on the ground.......... Bounced back up, made it into my second run and finished strong........ One of my better duathlons.... Helped my brother clean up the timing, transition, fininsh line area, www.runhigh.com , and headed up to the cottage to catch a great sunset on Lake Erie........ Three weeks later, doing mindless yard-work, pulling weeds etc., my lower back began to tighten up....... By Sunday morning, I was using crutches to get around......... A week and a half later, I was back on the bike, two weeks, I was running..... And just squeezed in my training for Cedar Point Rev 3 Half......... To be continued! Sincerely Still In Pain, Brian
