I have been using a Garmin 205 since 2006 (puchased slightly used for $100). It has since been adopted by my wife as she trains for the Big Sur Marathon.
I have been really happy with the 205 over the years but would appreciate opinions on each of the newer models - the 405 and the 305 - as I now find myself in need of a new Garmin.
Thanks.

I have used the 405 for 3 years now. It is okay. If I were in the market for a new Garmin, knowing what I know now, I'd look at the 310xt. Water proof, works with Ant+ power meters, has 20 hours of life on a fresh charge. Could be a one watch training/racing tool.
The 405 is sensitive to water so running in the rain is a real pain. I finally got the firmware update to take so it seems to work like new. I can't race a tri with it since swimming with it is not an option. Before firmware update it would crap out on long bricks so I would miss the last hour or so of my run data. Looking forward to the summer to see if it improves.
Recently purchased the 500 to work with my powertap. Probably should have bought the 310xt...

I have the 310xt. It is really good. I got rid of my bike computer and just use the garmin. I have not had luck with the swimming part of the 310, my distances and info are really messed up on it. the 405 face is very small for all the information I like to have when training and racing.

I also have the 310 xt and really like it. I agree with ken that it really doesn't work in the water as it loses the signal all the time. It does have a great battery life. I used it for my IM the whole race and the battery still had over 30% life left at the end and I finished in the dark! I love how you can use the bike mount if you want too.
