…or is it you that is hoping to get skinnier in 2011? Anyways…..
The New Year brought in lots and lots of crazy polar bears. The Polar Plunge seems to attract all sorts of different people but there are a few points that the club tries to get across each year with the plunge as summarized from Reddy-
1. 2011 marks the 8th year the club has sponsored the plunge!
2. CTC is an organization dedicated to encouraging a healthy lifestyle to the residents of NEOH. We have well over 300 members - and are welcoming to both newbie and seasoned veteran triathletes - the club hosts a wide variety of both athletic training and social events throughout the year.
3. We consider this the kick off to the triathlon year - many people are now getting back into training after a "break' in the fall.
4. This is also the kick off to our annual membership drive!
5. For many the new year brings 'resolutions' often to "get in shape" and "do a triathlon" - CTC is an organization that provides support and information to new people entering the sport - we would encourage anyone thinking about doing a triathlon to become a member.
Polar Plunge 2011 will go down in the books as a year that almost wasn’t. For the first time since the club has been doing this, Lake Erie beaches were now frozen over due to how very cold December had been. Status reports regarding ice and safety conditions were coming in. Edgewater Beach out, Huntington Beach out, Mentor out, Columbia Beach…maybe workable??? Yes, Columbia beach would be the best option so the announcement to move beaches went out!
A HUGE kudos for the 2011 plunge are owed to CTC Board members, Ken Beech and Mark Durno who went out with pickaxes and sledge hammers to open us up the plunge hole! In the email to the board members, Durno stated, "Remember, we're triathletes, d**n it! We improvise, adapt, overcome!” Ain't that the truth!
And with that, 2011 went off as another huge success with a turnout of probably 300 people and well over 200 plungers which had to line up and take turns jumping in! It made all local news stations and was even picked up nationally. Rumor has it Carney is even enjoying celebrity status!
Thank goodness the 2011 plunge went off or the club would have had a lot of extra polar plunge commemorative t-shirts left (which went like hotcakes that day!).

With regret the Jan 9th CWRU indoor tri has been cancelled. However we do have two other upcoming indoor tris which include:
* Sunday, February 13th at Twinsburg Rec Center (official flyer here www.clevetriclub.com/files/ctc-twins_indoor_triathlon.pdf)
* Sunday, March 20th at CSU
Participants do a pool swim, stationary bike ride, and a run on the indoor track with approximately 5 min transition time between each discipline. The order of events may vary depending on the wave to which you are assigned. Ranking will be determined by who goes the farthest in the allotted time. The indoor tris are a fun challenge that appeals to everyone – from seasoned triathletes to first-timers – because you set your own pace.
