Lately I've come to realize that i like open water swimming.... a lot. There is a certain swim that I would like to attempt by the age of 40, that gives me about 10 years to get there. I know it's a long time, but the swim is a long one and a cold one (not to mention a very expensive one).
I was wondering if anyone in the club had experience with long distance swimming (over 10 miles up to 25), in salt water, or cooler temps (60-65F). I'm aware of the training that is involved, and how extensive it needs to be. However nutrition, salt water tips, hydration, equipment, and any other tips are more than welcome.
All thanks in advance,
Cory

There is a guy that swims evenings at Notre Dame College that would be great for you to talk to. Unfortunately, I can't recall his name but he can be found in the pool many an evening swimming hard with his training partner. If my memory serves me I see them there on either Tues. or Thurs. nights. He's training for a long, self-supported open water swim this summer sometime (Straights of Magellan or something) and has done a long swim across the Mediterranean in the past, across the straight of Gibraltar or some craziness. One technique he mentioned is taking cold showers in the few months prior to the swim. I'm not sure of his caloric needs but he will have a sea kayak handing off hydration/nutrition and a small yacht also in support. He's planning a big swim from the Erie islands to the mainland as training. I think the only equipment for the swimmer is a speedo and goggles really

Sounds like the English Channel?

You might be aware that there's a swim every summer from Lakeside to Kelley's. It's around 4 miles, I think. Might be able to meet up with some like-minded people at that.
I think USMS has some resources for long-distance open water swimmers too.

Thanks for the input on the kelly's island swim matt, i actually wasnt aware of that one. I'm trying to loose some "winter" weight for the summer swimming, so that one may be perfect.
Tiffany, ebanks is right it is the channel swim. It might be a bit rediculous.... but then so is an iron man!

Cory, if you search this forum you should find a thread on the Kelly's swim. Or, google the town of Lakesides Web site. The swim is in July, I think.
