I was looking on the Ba website and saw some Cyclocross bikes. What type of racing is this. The bikes look like road bikes, but maybe race on dirt? How is this different than mountain biking. Also I was thinking about doing some bike only racing next year. What is the best way to get started?

Cross is literally a cross between road and mtn. A cross bike is like a road bike with slightly wider tires, fork, and stays on the frame (to allow the wider tires and some mud shedding). Brakes are different too (cantilevers over duel pivot road brakes).
Races are typically loops around a variable terrain course (dirt, gravel, grass, pavement, mud, whatever) where you have to dismount in sections to carry your bike over unridable obstacles.
Its really fun, and a bigger lung buster than any sprint ive ever done. There is a race today at noon down at Wendy Park if you're free and want to check it out. Ill be there watching.
If you want to try it for free, some of us meet at edgewater park on wednesdays at 6pm for a training race. I dont have a cross bike, so i ride my mtn bike (cross bike coming soon). I don't know what shop you use, but Spin and BA both carry good selections. I work at Spin now Sid so if you want come down and see me, ill show you some bikes.
Hope that answers some questions.

Rob, I've been doing the Medina group MTB ride on Wednesdays, but have been undecided about doing any of the cross races this year. Are the training races like real races, with a specific start and timed, or can I just show up around 6:00 and ride some laps?

Just show up and ride if you like. There's nothing official about the wednesday deal....just a bunch of friends racing each other for the hell of it.
