I am going back and forth on whether I should make the plunge and splurge on a swim skin for IMKY. This is my first IM, so I am not sure if is worth the $225 for a Blue Seventy pointzero3 swim skin. Do most of the athletes wear these? Any insight or opinions on this topic from the group would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, John

Watching the race last year, you will see a very wide variety of triathlon clothing worn for the swim. It will be a mix between swimsuits or swim jammers, tri-shorts, and speedsuits. I would say that tri-shorts/tops were the most prevalent but I may be wrong, that is just from memory and the pictures we took.
Danielle and I are both swimming IMKY in our tri-shorts/tops. I know several people that put up the money for a speedsuit for this year's race, and several that didn't. I don't think you can go wrong either way, and you certainly won't be alone no matter which direction you go. Unlike a wetsuit where I would get some buoyancy out of the suit, I didn't feel that the $$$ for one of these was worth enough of a time difference in the swim for me to make it worth it. I think it really just depends on what your goals for the day are.
I'm just gonna wear my tri-shorts and shave my body from head to toe to get the same effect. Skin to win!!! (joking)

I am planning to wear my tri shorts for the swim and leave my top in my T1 bag. So, no swim skin for me. It will be my first IM also.

I have a Xterra skin suit that I used for last year's IMKY. Someone can borrow it if they want to drive out to Cleveland Heights. Just don't bust it up. I'm 5'9" and 165# (was 170 during the race last year). just email me.

I bought a $8 baggy pair of swim trunks at walmart and did just fine in the swim leg last year. Do a flip off the pier (it's cool). Have fun with it and just take it easy. You'll do fine.

There was a guy one year at Lake Placid who raced in cutoff jeans and an old single speed bike with ape hangers and a banana seat. You're gonna' chafe anyway.
