I like my current family doctor (and internalist) but I don't love him. After a couple underwhelming experiences, I'm thinking it might be time to look for someone new.
Being that my activity level is relatively high I would be interested in a general doctor who has some insight on sports medicine or at least is a little more familiar with the needs of athletes.
Does anyone's regular physician meet these criteria? I'm wondering what would be the best way of finding such a physician.
Here's a "for example": I have issues absorbing iron. It's something I've had tests and procedures for - the end result being "We didn't find anything weird. We think you're fine overall. Do nothing". I'm thinking a physician with a little more knowledge of athletes might be able to give me different feedback and how it might apply to my performance.
Should I look to combine the two or should I simply have a sports doctor and a general doctor? Just wanted to get your thoughts.

You do not need a sports medicine doctor for general care.... they specialize in sports related diseases and injuries and there are not very many around.
My husband is a family physician and he personally picked my primary doc.... he believes that you should fine a doctor who is an athlete themselves. My doc is a runner and she understands the athlete psyche/isssues.
