The rule has been in place for a long time, just never enforced. Its just to bad that it was abused to where the WTC had to do something about it. I have seen pros come across the finish line with their kids and I have seen many 16 hour finishers with theirs. I have entered the finish chute 3 times with my kids, and on two other occasions I crossed with out them. Personally, I would rather see the WTC put more efforts in the drafting on the Bike?
What do you think?

Totally agree with the focus on rules that matter to race such as drafting, blocking, etc. I don't have any kids that I know about so I don't really have an opinion however I can see where someone may be irritated when they get their Finish Photo with 3 kids that aren't theirs. To some people the Photo May be the Mantle piece, to others like us, the race goes on!

To be honest, i really don't care one way or another. Obviously they did this for a reason, either for liability reasons, or because a majority of racers wanted the change.....either way, I'm not really fussed. It does make the finish chute simpler for sure, and all racers get a chance for the perfect photo now (if thats what they desire) without a bunch of kids that aren't theirs.
As far as resources spent on enforcement, i dont see anything extra needed to hand out DQs to people that break the rules, so i dont think it affects their ability to catch drafters. That said, im sure drafting is still an issue, but once out on the loops in wisconsin i didnt see much drafting personally....although in places like florida im sure it could use some more attention.

There are three ways to handle this that I think are fair.
1) Enforce the current rule.
2) Change the rule so that you can cross the line carrying your kid, as long as you've carried that kid the ENTIRE race. Swim, bike, run.
3) Change the rule so that EVERYBODY carries a kid across the finish line. Here's how that would work: a) Go to local school and get a bunch of kids. b) Make them wait near the finish line. c) Every time a runner approaches the finish line, a volunteer grabs one of the kids and hands it to the runner. The runner then carries that kid across the finish line and deposits the kid in a special playpen near the med tent. Runner can then go and get IV.
Problem solved.

Matt,
Do you REALLY feel that way or was that just a copy and past from slowtwitch?
I think I read that before.

LOL Matt only the Hoyts would qualify.
While I understand wanting your kids crossing with you, I don't think it is a good idea. When I watched IM WI in 2006 I was standing right near the last turn before the straightaway to the chute. I can't tell you how many runners had to avoid kids being handed to or running out to their parent which could have resulted in either an injured runner or kid.
I think it is a good decision.

I have always at every race told my husband he can let my daughter run in with me ONLY if there is no one around me when I finish. She must get a nod from me for permission. Ha! I don't usually have that problem so she is able to run. Respect the racers always, but there are some that don't do that. Its disappointing for them to wait all day, but I do see how it clogs up during the rush hour, usually not a problem at the 16+ mark.
I do agree if they make a rule they should enforce it... kids in chute... drafting... etc.

Its quite a good way to acknowledge the long suffereing families though that have had to put up with you during your training, they dont nec. have to cross the line with you, but to have their photograph taken with you, its been their journey too, so why not give them some acknowledgement at the end? So maybe they could have a "family booth" somewhere for photos after the finish.
