Im total Newbie and have a question on Tri shorts. Ive been training sine mid november for a sprint and I need to start doing bricks at the gym. I need a pair of tri shorts for this. Im told to get pair with padding for the bike. My question is what size to buy and how tight should they be? What about compression fit? I plan to order online I wear a 34-35 pant/shorts. Thanks BD

Depending on manufacturer, and how they are cut - different brands will fit differently. I understand the desire to buy online because it's cheaper, but when it comes to things like this (anything where fit is paramount) i really recommend buying locally because you can try the stuff on. Chaffing sucks, and is totally worth dropping a couple of extra bucks to avoid it imo. Second Sole in Rocky River has some good offerings at a reasonable price - www.2ndsole.com/ Shorts should be pretty tight, no bagginess anywhere, and minimal wrinkling if possible. If you do decide to go the online route, size charts linked to the product are probably your best bet for getting the right size, although it's still a bit of a crap shoot. For example, castelli shorts don't fit me well at all, even though their "medium" is supposedly my size, yet they fit another guy i know wonderfully. Either way, good luck.

Ditto every thing that Aussie said. I'm a 35 waist with a medium build an I wear "large" tri-shorts. Start there - you should be cool. If you are on the heavier end (over 190) or have big a** theighs, you may want to consider XL, but I doubt it.

Surprisingly enough I agree with Aussie ;D
The few bucks you save online will not be worth the pain of chafing or if the fit is off especially if you start doing longer races. Use vaseline or body glide also anywhere skin meets fabric. It is amazing even in a short period of time how a seam or tag can rub away skin leaving you burning and sore.

Thanks guys, I was able to pick pair up at Bike Authority today. They made HUGE difference in the pool today compared to the parachute Ive been wearing. Did a mock Sprint in the gym today and it went well except for the 3 min trasition.

I am 33-34 waist, 195, and have not only big a** thighs, but a big a** and big thighs. You don't want a bad fit.
