Sh@t, I have a basement full of Viagra - I work for Pfizer!
Lamastra, Park, Stern et al better look out in 2009 ;D I do, however, feel the effects of Viagra on performance might be outweighed by the negative effects on aerodynamics, particularly on the swim.
All kidding aside, the discovery of Viagra is quite a remarkable story. Originally studied as an anti-hypertensive [systemic], it really did not work at all. However, some of the men in the clinical trials reported as a side effect that something that wasn't working before, was in fact, now "working just fine!"
Viagra is also being used for pulmonary hypertension and mountain climbers have been studied to see the effects of Viagra on pulmonary edema, a life threatening condition that sometimes occurs at high altitude. The half-life of Viagra is very short, around 3 hours, so I am suspicious of any effect on long distance performance. Then again, like the article stated, any positive effect of even one percent might make the difference in an elite athlete.......time to hit the basement, ha - ha!
