Its been a few hours since I rode the XTERRA O.N.E. race course (and then some). I have a few thoughts about the experience. Note that I have Mountain Biked twice in my life and both times were casual. Today was good. I rode moderately hard and only went over the handlebars once - no harm done. A few scrapes and mud later, here's what I learned:
1. This is pure fun - like being a kid again.
2. My brother advised me to look as far ahead as possible - good advice - probably saved a few more falls.
3. Good mountain biking probably requires years to develop the skills - I'm guessing West Branch is tame compared to other courses - good thing for me!
4. I had platform pedals - any newbie like me better not try to clip in - THAT could be ugly. I can't count how many trees I pushed off of with my legs 'cause I just ain't used to technical riding yet.
5. The mountain biking community is much like the triathlon community - very friendly and inviting.
6. Take on roots and rocks head on - side swiping is a recipie for going down.
7. Trail running feels good on the knees !
8. Don't be afraid to get off the bike and walk around things you aren't comfortable with - especially if you aren't serious about this.
9. Mountain biking is all about power and responsiveness - so much different than road riding.
10. How the hell do you pass people on these tiny trails ??
Alan, Chuck, Brett, Jess - good to meet you all...
Aussie Rob - thanks for letting me borrow your mountain bike for this...
Lookin' forward to the race.
