Deciding on my first tri-thinking it will be the one July 20th in Bay Village. I have heard that it is a smaller race and good for a first tri. What do you all think? Also, I have no wetsuit and being so new do not plan on investing in one this year but what will the water temp be? How much open water swimming should I get in beforehand? And how with the water being cold and no wetsuit? Any suggestions are welcome. If investing in a wetsuit is nearly necessary I could probably do it but having bought a bike and lots of other equipment (which is fun!) I thought that could wait. Thanks so much!

Jen, speaking as a weak swimmer, the tri at Bay Village is one where you can easily get by without a wetsuit. I don't wear mine there even though I wear it everywhere else. Just plan on leaving a pair of shoes somewhere at the end of the swim course, because it is a fairly long run uphill from the water to the transition area. The water temperature will be fine by then. Get in as much open water swimming as you can and try, if possible, to practice swimming close to other people to approximate that aspect of the actual race swim.

DO NOT BUY A WETSUIT JUST FOR THIS RACE !!! Really. This swim is so short you may as well change the name of the race to a "wet biathlon". If you do this and decide that you hate triathlon, then it will be an unbelievable was of money. Always go cheap on your first race. The only $$ you should spend is on goggles and race entry fees.
