73 runs south of town. Although, of the three major roads coming in to LP, 86 heading west (towards Saranac) is the only one that isn't part of the course. In general, Lake Placid is not an easy place to get to.
With that said, I know other racers stay out toward or beyond both Wilmington (off 86, on the course) and Keene (off 73, on the course). I am guessing they either get in to town that morning via the shuttle buses that run throughout the day, or they're able to drive in that early.
