www.darbaroud.com/index_uk.phpHas anyone done something like this or thought about doing something like this.. I was flipping thru the channels yesterday and came across this.. I do not know how many more Ironman races I am going to do.. and have been wondering what a person does after they stop training and racing for that distance.. But this looked like a grueling experience... Kinda caught my attention.. Just hope there is something like this in the US somewhere.. Would anyone know of any websites for events like this?

I think there's now a jungle version of the MdS too, in Asia. Same organization.
Google "Barkley Marathons." I think that would be right up your alley.

Thanks for posting this. I wasn't aware this was on tv.
A friend of mine from high school (Canisius HS in Buffalo, NY class of 87) was interviewed in the piece from ABC News. His name is Jay Batchen and he organizes the American contingent for MDS. He has a firm called Dreamcatchers. Go to their website (www.dreamchaserevents.com) to learn more about Des Sables and all the other insane events they do. Its amazing stuff.

Thanks for the website.. I will check it out..
I just got the Endurance News in the mail from Hammer Nutrition and there is an article in there on "Beyond Iron Distance" which talks about kinda what I was looking for, and also mentions some other stuff..
It mentioned the Double Ironman, the Triple Ironman, ulrtaman and ultra-triathlons..
One called the Deca-Iron.. a 10 times the iron distance... Truly amazing.. Swim 24 miles, bike 1120 miles and run 262 miles.. U race one ironman race for 10 consecutive days..
Unbelieveable.. How would a person even train for something like this.. How could U go to sleep after the first day, knowing u have to go back out 9 more times and do that again..

Check out 4 deserts dot com.
Each of 4 races is completed over 7 days - Egypt, Chile, China and Antarctica are the destination options.
Total of 155 miles of running (or perhaps walking).

They showed on TV the feet of the athletes in the med tents during the event... Yeah.. not nice.. I am looking a few years down the road.. maybe spend the next couple years doing a few ultra runs 50+.. I saw a 70.5 run in PA.. or one of the ultra cycling events.. Running a 100 miles seems long... There is alot of events out there I never knew about.. Been kinda fun searching for them.. There's one I am considering in the next two years.. its the 24 hours or triathlon.. www.24hoursoftriathlon.com/index_1.html anyone intrested?

Tim, I partipated with a few of the Deca- Iron particpates during the double. They are amazing! Arthur from England at 70 is still going strong doing the Triple and then about 1 month later the Deca! Thomas from Hungry's village all raised money to send him over here for the Triple and Deca. Alot of great stories. The RD for the double also crews for someone at the Deca and did a review of the race for Triathlete magazine.
If your interested in possibly doing a double or triple iron, you should plan on going down to Virginia in October and volunteering and check out the race and talk to people. Its an experience.I went and volunteered the year before I did it. They get people from England, Swedan, Italy, Mexico, Brazil (he runs barefoot). I am humbled for being allowed to particpate in the same race as these guys!
I am doing the double again and am looking for a new crew this year. My "Princesses" have no desire in returning to crew as it was quite an experience for them (plus Amy is doing IMW the month prior). I do have my husband (non runner/biker) and a couple other guys who are a strong possiblity. Trying to find some ladies to help (very few even particpate).
The lady I particpated with last year, and who I am crewing for in July ( Double Iron in Quebec), lives in colorado and does the 24 hours of triathlon. This is a race I'd like to do as well. But the thought of having to take apart my bike to fly it out to a race doesnt appeal to me (not machincally inclined), and the price of gas is outragious.
dont forget we have a few great ultra running events locally. Mohican, burning river
and there are 12 hour and 24 hour bike races that are a completly different breed. I did the 24hr bike last year, and just did the 12 hr bike race this past saturday (rained like hell with 30mph winds).

Thanks so much Debbie.. The deca is just so amazing, amazing that people can do it.. there is a 15 times the ironman race too.. unbelieveable.. I do not know if I would ever even consider a race like that.. but Ya never know...
I would, if U would not mind, a little more information on how U train for the double.. I think this is something I would like to do in the next few years.. as far as like weekly hours and mileage.. I would take it U would almost have to do some ultras to get ready for the double?
Good Luck to U this year at the double.. Sounds like U had a great time racing it last year.. Do U have a race report from last years race? I would love to see it.. if its not to much trouble...
Thanks.... Tim...

Tim, Everyone trains differently and there is always the debate of how much training is enough for the event your training for. You'd be surprised at how many hours I actually got in. I think I got up to no more than 15-20 hours a week of training, if I got everything in. My weekly mileage is probably half of what yours would be. I haven't a fast twitch muscle in my body (expect for chugging beer ;D) I do know that my longest long run was only 3 hours (maybe i got a 3:30 cant remember) and remember thats not much mileage when your slow. Longest bike was 8 hour and I did a continual swim that was about 2:45 (not in pool). Biggest thing is training in your limits/abilities, listening to your body (mine loves off days too much), and not over doing it. It helps to have a coach to figure everything out. And remember an event like this isn't about being the fastest ,although that is a hell of a bragging right! Its 10% ability and 90% mental, I can attest to that. I'm not fast, I have more junk in the trunk then most female triathlons, I lack discipline and have a very busy family/social life, but I have more mental toughness than alot of people. I guess that was from always being the last picked for teams and sitting on the bench all those years in my youth!! (now a days every kid gets a change to play) It would be nice to do some ultras before, but I did not. I did do the 24 hour bike race so that would count as one. And I did my first marathon (outside of Ironman). Unfortunately I never finished my race report, something I regret big time. I keep saying I will finish it someday. I will for sure complete one after this years race. I'd be happy to discuss more with you and your always welcomed to email me at debbie.sidol@mmoh.com. At the next get together I can bring the pictures and tell you more about it. Safe training Debbie "stregth does not come from physical capicity. It comes from an indomitable will" Mohandas K. Gandhi
