First off - we are very luck in OH with so many great state parks. This was my first time to Alum Creek (2 hr. south) and I was not disappointed. Very nice venue - up there with some of the best in OH - perfect for racing. Lake was 70 degrees, bike was very managable - not flat but also not killer hills, and the run (though I did not do it) looked quite nice. I would highly recommend racing at this location.
COWS - Columbus Open Water Swims
Set of three races (.5, 1 and 2 miles) - not a huge turn out but respectable. All levels of swimmers. These are FANTASTIC training races. Some folks did one race some did all three. I HIGHLY recommend doing this series in July (check out the Fat Rabbit web site to gt more info). I did all three and it was a tough, but good training day. course was well laid out with a bit of chop on the back stretch.
If you are inexperienced at open water swimming or really want to see what you can do for just a swim - well these are your races. Just the perfect opportunity to work on the first part of your trifecta.
Alum Creek - Long Course
I'm still not running due to the foot - thus I did my own aquabike. The set up for this race was as accomodating and professional as you will find. Water was completely flat which made for an easy swim. Quick dash to T1 from the beach and off to the bike. The course looked flatter than it really was. Two loops for 40 miles. Hammered pretty hard and felt tired at the end but could have shuffled the run if need be. Oddest thing was racking my bike in T2 and just sitting there. No rush to move on and watching everyone else go by.
