As the weather turns and more and more groups work outs begin (both planned and ad hoc) I wanted to pass a few words on to the many new folks we have involved with the Club......
1. EVERYONE was a newbie at some time - for some of us that was decades ago for others that was last year. Being a newbie is hugely enjoyable beacuse everything is a "new" adventure - revel in your newness
2. By and large everyone associated with CTC is very welcoming and inviting - being new is not a curse or stigma - that is just not how we look at things
3. DON'T be intimidated or impressed with anyone - 1 year, 5 years, 25 years of experience - who cares - we all will learn from each other
4. Get OUT and GET involved - the very best thing you can do as a new person is find a group to train with AT LEAST once a week. Glom every bit of info and advice you can. Watch what others are doing and learn what to do and NOT to do. Slogging through tri training alone SUCKS -
5. Develop your own little POSSE - your support group - people you like and can train with, exchange ideas and learn from. In conjunction with #4 - there will be days that you dont want to train - but if you got a group or people to hold you accountable - well you will show up. I cant tell you how many times I did not want to do some work out - but i knew if i blew it off there would be a text or call from someone bustin my a ss about being a wussie and not showing
6. Make a large part of this tri stuff social - develop friendships - get ont eh phone, text or email and net work with people - keep in contact with your training groups - these people may very well become some of your best friends in life. And without a doubt I know the tri firends I have made through CTC and over the last 25 years are the people I can count on in life to bail me out of jail or have a great time partying with - tim ritt please come pick me up i just ran out of gas ;[
7. Set some realistic and stretch goals - in all sorts of ways like - i'm gonna train 5 times a week, i'm gonna do 3 sprints and an oly to cap my season, i'm gonna ride with X group every week - what ever -
8. volunteer at a bigger event - it is an eye opening experience - helping out at a big event will be a motivating experience and you will learn a ton. If you can get to one of the big 70.3 or IM races you will be amazed and hugely pumped up
9 Introduce your self over and over again - and understand the people you meet for 8 weeks in a row at the tuesday night ride will have NO IDEA who you are when you bump into them at a swim or in a bar and you don't have your helmet and sun glasses on
10. watch the Forum and USE the Forum - lot of good (and some not so) advice - but also a great place to network and find training activities. If you plan to traing and want company - POST to the Forum - it may take quite a few post over many weeks but as people see your name they will begin to show for your work out.
Aussie Rob needs to chime in on this one - he is the perfect example of someone who DID not follow up with getting involved for about 6 months after he and I first corresponded - then one night he shows for a BRICK - now we cant get ride of him ;] - and he is gonna smack out his first IM this year in impressive fashion
