I was in a pool for the first time tonight (well, aside from pool parties and cannonball contests), and I was awful ... a total embarrassment. Tell me, please, that I'll get better.

things will get better, just be patient! there are books and coaches that can help out with technique, form, stroke, breathing, etc. plus that is what we are all here for, to offer advice and support to help keep you going. just keep at it!!!

Thinking back 4 years ago to my first swim experience in training... Did six laps - completely winded. I added one lap per workout (every other day). Before I knew it, I was up to 40 laps without stopping. Your first race will be a swimming disaster - just accept it 'cause your second race will be unbelievably improved. Learn technique (either through literature like "total immersion" and/or by taking lessons from a coach who understands distance/triathlon swimming). Keep this important fact in mind: Your body doesn't know how to efficiently move oxygen to these new muscles that you are recruiting for work. It will take weeks to get comfortable. It will take YEARS to become efficient. Half the fun of this sport is the unmeasurable improvements that you will notice season after season. The experts say that it takes 4 to 5 years of training and racing to "get your legs" in any one sport/discipline (arms in this case, of course). In the mean time, enjoy the burning lungs for a few weeks !!
