I have learned so much via this forum over the years that I wanted to add a couple of things I learned from my first marathon completed in December. These are tips I had not picked up anyplace so perhaps it will help add to the current body of knowledge.
Tip 1. Believe it when people tell you not to over dress. I was within two seconds of keeping a windbreaker on. Logic said yes you will need it, but Forum advice said don't take it. I left it behind and after half a mile was very happy about it.
Tip 2. I had two layers on top, a short and long T, shorts and a cap. I took off my long T at mile 5 as I was getting warm, but knew I would need it when I hit the wind going around a 10 mile lake. I wrapped the long T around my waist. At mile 9 I hit the lake and the winds and needed my long T. It was now soaking wet from my sweat since it was wrapped around my waist. I was desperate and used it anyway, but in hindsight would have kept it on the entire time because it would have been more dry.
Tip 3. Ditto with my hat. I was using it for sun protection and as a heat regulator. It was cloudy and as I warmed, I stuck the bill down the back of my shorts. When I needed it, it was soaked, but I was desperate.
Tip 4. I think I was taught this on the Forum but did not listen. If you don't run as you train, you are going to encounter issues. On my training runs, I would never stop and walk for nutrition. Late in the marathon I started to walk through the aid stations to load up. Once I stopped, it was hard to kick it back in gear as my muscles started to tighten. I lost lots of momentum. So listen to the great Forum advice I suppose is Tip 4.
