Recently, I have seen multiple reports about the high contamination levels of Lake Erie and that Lake Erie beaches are some of the most contaminated in the country. I hear that the lake should be avoided after periods of heavy rainfall, as the sewers back up and spill into the lake.
I need open water swim experience, but I am concerned to swim in Lake Erie. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with the contamination (snorkel, full mask, etc.)? Also, are there other open water locations you would recommend, besides Lake Erie?

Here's a link to the beach sampling report: www.odh.state.oh.us/odhPrograms/eh/bbeach/beach_samplemonitoring.aspxI'm not sure where you live, but Headlands and Fairport are nearby for me and I've never been hesitant to swim there. If there are big rains, the next day is the most likely to have high bacteria counts. Heck, I've even swam at Villa Angela after a camping trip a couple years, so maybe I'm not a good example. I think some folks were shooting cider vinegar after some questionable water quality swims, so that may be an option if you're concerned about getting sick following a lake swim.

I agree. I've been swimming in the lake all summer and havent been ill once. Granted i stay away for a couple of days after significant rain, but you should do that everywhere.

"that which does not kill us only makes us stronger"
I've been swimming in the lake regularly for 4 summers in a row now Never been sick once
Even if you ignore bacteria, it's probably a good idea anyways to avoid the lake right after a big rain. It's amazing how much trash washes down into the lake. I've never seen so many starbucks cups in my life as I did floating in the water at Bratenahl after a storm...

The Apple cider vinegar really does work. Any stomach sickness it will get rid of it. Lowers cholesterol too! mine went from 280 to 160
