I did my first Tri last weekend at the Wendy's Tri, it was a sprint distance (1/2 mi swim, 17mi bike and a 5K run). Since I had not run since my knee being scoped, this race was an F race (Finish and Fun) and to see how the knee is progressing.
The family and I drove down to Columbus on Saturday so we would not have to get up and drive early on Sunday. I had a Z2 1 hour workout on the bike scheduled so I figured it would be a good place to ride and to see where the park was in relation to the hotel. We arrived at the park, grabbed a quick lunch that we had packed, pulled the bike out of the car and went on my ride. When I got back, I went down to the lake and asked the lifeguard what the temperature of the water was, although she didn't know the temperature her comment was that it was very cold and would be colder in the morning (glad I brought the wetsuit). Packed the bike back in the car and off we went to check-in to the hotel.
We had a problem with the room at the hotel and ended up having to stay at the hotel next door because the first hotel did not have another room that we could stay in. Got checked in to that hotel, unpacked the car and proceeded to try and find some dinner. This weekend was also OSU graduation weekend and all of the restaurants near downtown we packed. After driving around looking for a restaurant to eat at we decided to head back to the hotel and just eat at the Bob Evans We ate dinner and went back to the hotel to get the bike ready to go and turn in early.
I woke up at 4:00am made a quick PBJ, ate the sandwich and relaxed for a few minutes. After relaxing, I hopped in the shower and got ready, went to pack the car and found out very quickly that I should have packed some other clothes as it was only 50 degrees outside, finished packing the car and left for the race.
We arrived at the race around 6:00 am, unpacked the car and headed over to the transition area picked a sport for my stuff and noted which rack I was at. I then got in line for marking and to pick up my timing chip. Once finished with that I made my way back to transition and made sure everything was laid out and ready to go. Stood around and just took in the experience and watched what everyone was doing trying to keep myself calm. After seeing a great many people wearing wetsuits I decided that I should probably wear mine. Put the suit on up to my waist and headed down to the start of the swim for the race meeting.
Got down to the swim start and stood around on the beach waiting for the meeting to start, the race was supposed to start at 7:00 but it was apparent that it was going to start late. I decided to put my suit on the rest of the way and go for a quick warm-up swim. Walked into the water and noticed that it was very moderate in temperature but I did find a few cold pockets during my warm-up.
The race started at 7:30 with the first group which included the pros, corporate challenge, and YMCA members. The next group was 10 minutes back and my group was another 8 minutes back. Not knowing what to expect, I started the swim about 100 feet back from everyone else. I kept a steady pace and finished in 14:44. At the end of the swim I learned something that I had never heard anyone talk about, being very light-headed and dizzy coming out of the swim and into T1.
As I staggered to T1 I got my wetsuit down to my waist and finished getting it off while hanging onto the bike rack, put my shoes and helmet on for the bike and finished with a T1 time of 4:26, very slow but I know what to expect next time.
The bike was pretty uneventful, there was a great deal of drafting and people not staying to the side of the road. I stayed near the center line of the road as I was continually passing people and came into T2 with a 45:58 bike split. Per my coach I was to keep the bike consistent and not push real hard because of the knee. I had the 8th fastest bike split in my age group and 37th fastest bike overall, not bad for keeping it on cruise control for the bike.
Coming into T2 I pulled my feet out of my shoes so I could do a flying dismount (first time I had tried this) and dismounted the bike. I got to my T2 place; racked the bike, put my socks, shoes, and hat on grabbed my gels and a quick drink of my Gatorade and off I went. T2 time was 2:13, better but still need work.
I left T2 and the knee starting acting up within 500ft of the run with shooting pains so I ended up walking. My run (walk) time was 38:33, for a total time of 1:45:54 (372nd overall and 48th in my age group).
Though I was disappointed that my knee is not where I had hoped it would be I had a great deal of fun and can't wait to do the next race. I was pleased with my swim time and very happy with my bike time, my only goal (even before the knee) was to not come in last place in my age group for any of the disciplines which I was able to accomplish.
Hope I didn't bore anyone,
Derek
