Been reading through this board the last few days and thought i'd register and introduce myself. I'm Rob, and i live in Lakewood. When registration opens, im planning on registering for the Cleveland Tri (olympic distance). It'll be my first tri, and im super excited about it. I started training about 3 weeks ago, and let me tell you, im a far cry from my former fitness level I used to run lots of 10k back in Australia (former home), and did some swimming there too...but all that was nearly 10 years ago. I've always wanted to get involved in tri, mainly from watching Greg Welch and Brad Bevan in the St George Tri series they used to televise back in Aus...but lost sight of it when i quit running/swimming. I mtn bike as much as i can, and this past summer really gave me the reality check i needed....i was completely winded on a fairly easy climb. So what better way to lose a few lbs and rebuild my fitness level than to get stuck into an old dream right? Anywho, looks like a good club you have here and ill be joining very shortly if i can. Initially i was just looking for a group to do open water swims with, but found you guys and thought it'd be good to meet some like minded people and hopefully a few other newbies like myself. Heh, that's a pretty long hello, but its a rainy saturday and im bored @ home with nothing else to do and nursing a cold.

Welcome aboard mate. How's that for some Australian lingo? In all seriousnes, this is a great group of folks who do a lot of training and have a lot of fun together. Check out the boards for some upcoming social events where you can get to know some others.

Where in Oz are you from? I'm originally from the northern beaches of Sydney - great to have a fellow Aussie hanging around these parts!

Hey cool! Another aussie in Cleveland! Sydney-sider no less! and after 4 years i was beginning to think i was the only one! I'm a shire boy. Grew up in Illawong (small burb next to Menai) and spent most of my free time at Cronulla. Miss the beach alot. I'm still only starting out training wise. Currently running 3 to 4 miles at a time at roughly 8:30 pace, with some days being harder to finish than others. Surprised myself last week when i ticked over 1500m in the pool, but it wasn't fast by any means, I just wanted to see how far i could swim since i was feeling good at the time. No idea what im like on the bike, and its not much of a bike...i'll be riding my commuter (hybrid) while i learn the ropes. Im assuming most of you are much faster than that and i was thinking about building a better base before i come out and try and train with you guys. Im looking forward to getting over this initial hurdle and feeling like im good enough to become a full fledged paying member. Dave, it's "OI!" mate. "Oy" is a funny looking dog like creature from the Dark Tower books, but its good to hear that chant, its been a while since ive heard it

I think you will be surprised at the variety in speed amongst CTC members. This is a club, not a team. There is no pressure to be the best. I have always found other members sharing course space with me no matter how slow I go. 8:30 is no snails pace at this time of the year. The benifits to joining will pay off quickly thru club discounts. I beleive Andrew said The Cleveland race will be a $10 entry discount. Wander down to the Bike Authority and your membership is paid for after discounts on gear. Throw in the nifty CTC tshirt (free with menbership) and you have instant comraderie at the races. Not sure why anyone doing tri in NEOhio would not become a member. I am to poor to not pay for membership. During the past year I beleive that thru discounts, special offers, a fundraiser for my Ironman entry, this club has saved me at least $500. Knowing this, I have no reluctance toward paid membership.

I feel really good when I get a 13-minute mile running, and at the CTC open-water swim workouts, I'm typically way behind everyone else.

Rob: Don't limit yourself... it's amazing how much easier it is to run with a group - all the talking and fun makes the time fly by... ;D Works with biking & swimming too! I won't even tell you how many times I got dropped starting out... we all finish at the same place - fast or slow - just trying is the most important piece of the puzzle!! Hope to see you soon! M

I joined the club just a year and half ago and love it! The support is fantastic!
I also live in Lakewood and my hubby is from Australia!
Feel free to shoot us an email since you're in the neighboorhood:

He's a diver, not a triathlete, but his mum always sends over Cherry Ripes and Coty's Cordial if you're missing it! (He's still working on getting some VB or Cascade!)
