Need some advice or insight on planning for race/training leading up to my first IM.
I'm doing IMLP which is July 20. I trying to decide whether to take a long weekend and drive up to LP for training weekend and become familiar with the course. Or schedule in a early season HIM?
To keep on top of my training program I don't want to try and do both. My race training is going well so I believe my confidence will be there as the season moves on. But doing one of these I think would help ease any worries or nervousness for my first IM.
Any thoughts or experiences from you IM vets would be great!

Race, race and more racing... Do both if you can... But, I think the weekend in NY would benefit the most.. and the Half IM would be a really great training day...
I think anytime you can get to a course and swim, ride and run some of the course it really takes away a lot of the worries that go thru your mind for months before hand... You have that mental picture of what to expect ahead of time and can practice similar conditions in training leading up to race day..
Lord knows we have enough on our minds about the IM race as it is... So getting a few things of the list helps and getting comfortable with what to expect is huge...

If you can afford the time and expense, go up there to train. You won't be alone. Last year, I went to a triathlon camp put on by Angela Forster and her coach. There were a ton of other athletes out there on the course. Felt like race day.

When I did my IMLP in 2006 I did the Mountaineer HIM as my tune up race. I didn't make a pre race trip to LP, didn't have the time or money. I did make it up to LP early enough where I was able to drive both the bike and run course. I specifically rode the downhill to Keane so I knew what to expect.

I did the California 70.3 (March 31) before CdA last year (June 24). I found it immensely helpful and confidence building in a way that cruising the IM course by myself would not have accomplished. But that being said, it was my first half.

I thought riding the course a few times at GCT was invaluable.
Its doubtful i can do it for Moo this year, but i would really really like to.

Thanks for the input everyone!
I guess it's time to squeeze the schedule and budget to see if both can fit in.

Hey Ryan, As I said at the swim meet - I believe knowing the IMLP course prior to the race will pay huge dividends. If you want to do both the race and course preview than maybe knock both out at once. There is a 1/2IM in the Lake Placid area which should correspond well in terms of timing to the actual race. This would of course be a HUGE weekend so unless you've built a big volume based foundation than it may be a bit of a overkill. Anyhow, here is the race: www.tupperlakeinfo.com/tinman/index.htm
