I was reading the Mdot tattoo thread and someone mentioned the entrance fee for an IM North America race. I began to wonder if there really was a difference between that race and a race of the same distance, but not an Ironman North America race. Are the just as well run? Are the volunters as well organized. Are the courses marked as well. Do the communities pull out all the stops and come out to support the race. Are the aid stations set up as well. I would love to hear from some triathletes who have done both and see what they think. Especially as to whether it is worth the extra money. How much are IM distance races by the way?

Did Full Vineman in 2006. I thought it was a very well-organized race by an experienced race director. Although I didn't experience the "over the top" atmosphere of a NAS event, I didn't think it was lacking anything significant either. I can't say either host town (Guerneville and Windsor) really turned out in full force to support it, I do think people were generally aware of the race. I am pretty sure the aid stations were manned by locals.
The course was as beautiful as any, the race was safe and fair. And with 200 people racing instead of 2000, you don't have to worry about getting your head kicked in on the swim or navigating around draft packs on the bike. And your legs feel just as crappy heading out on the run as in any other ironman event.
I think the race fee was $200.
