I will be doing the Lake Placid IM on July 23, 2006. I'm curious to learn more about what the group would suggest for races in preperation up to the race. I am planning out my 2006 season and am debating around the idea of doing either the Tupper Lake Tinman (06/25/06) or the Little Smokies Triathlon (05/28/06) as a final preperation race for Lake Placid. I am wanting to do a half prior to LP that is somewhat challenging on the bike and heard that these two were good candidates. I ideally would like to do Tupper Lake so I could go to LP on Sunday and ride the IM course. Is it reasonable or a good idea to do a half 4 weeks prior to your IM?

Adam
A lot will depend on how well you recover.
Because IMUSA is your A race - any race you do in the lead up should not be treated as anything other than a long training session - i.e. - use it to practice sighting in the swim and swimming in a pack, practice your transitions and nutrition and to become accustomed to the bike to run muscle group change.
Some folks will go hard on one or two disciplines - only to back off on the run and cruise to the finish - as the run tends to have the longest period of recovery needed.
I would go for the race that is further out - to ensure you maximise your recovery time - and be mindful of your taper.
Your effort during either of these races should be considerate of this being a training opportunity - saving your best performance for IMUSA
Hope this helps

I'll be doing the HFP Mountaineer race at the end of June prior to IM USA.

Adam,
fyi, tinman is very well run race.. the bike course is mostly long rollers.. the run is good long up hill for the first half, i think part of it used to run thru a trail,, incase of rain, need to be very careful with pot wholes full of water.. there is a somewhat steep hill, then 1-2 miles of flat and another downhill to finish.. if you do tinman., as adam suggested do as training or consider skipping part or all of the run.
good luck at LP..
