Not many IM posts lately. How is everyone's training going?
I am counting down 6 weeks to IM USA!
So today was a 6-hour continuous "long day" workout. 45 minutes open water swimming, 4 hours on the bike, 1 hour run. I did everything out of Fairport Harbor park. Met with a friend at 7AM for the swim. Went pretty well - we swam for about 44 minutes - but by the time we got out things were heating up fast.
Out on the bike. I was sweating like a mo fo! I had with me a 20 oz bottle of water, a 16 oz bottle of Gatorade, plus a 40 oz camelback with water. And of course, all my food and my electrolyte pills. I thought that would be plenty, but took along some money in case I'd need to stop to replenish.
I rode out towards Thompson then down to Route 6 and into Ashtabula COunty. Well I guess I forgot what training in real heat means, because not only did I go through all that fluid, I bought another 20 oz of water on the ride and chugged that too! But I wheeled back to Fairport in 4 hrs 6 mins having covered 82 miles. So I had kept a good pace (my desired race pace).
By now, the temp was now in the 90s and I had a 6.5 mile (3.25mi x 2) course laid out for me to run. There was no shade, and it was almost all on concrete. The first lap was slow but steady, and I came in at right around a half hour. Second lap, about halfway into it my skin felt like it was boiling! I was drinking to keep cool, but my heart was racing around 165 bpm, so I slowed and walked a bit. Last half of that lap was pretty ugly, but I got through it. It was a good gut check. Struggle makes you strong!
