All, I have enjoyed each sport separately in the recent past. I've completed various runs up to a half marathon. Same goes for cycling up to 100 miles. I'm now working on the swim, which seems to be going well. That said, am I considered a newbie? Can anyone offer some advice as to what I can or should be doing to prepare myself for my first triathlon this year? Is anyone in the Stow/Hudson area and wanting to get together for training, planning, conversing and so forth? Thanks in advance for your time!

Welcome to the sport - Couple of thoughts for you - First - get outside and swim in the open water - if you're in Hudson you could go to Munroe Falls once it opens - a group meets there on Monday nights - you'll get to meet some club members also. Second - practice running off the bike in a brick workout - do your normal bike then transition into a run - the key here is to do it frequently - don't need to run all that long 10-20 minutes is fine - just go till you get into a running rhythm Finally - suggest you go to see one as a spectator (or better yet as a volunteer) before you do one - the water start and the transitions can get pretty confusing if you're not used to them
and have fun

I would try to check out the Newbie events that relate to the pieces of triathlon that you're missing...the practice tri's, clinics and brick workouts. If you can make it, I would also recommend the tri camp coming up in May at Mohican. If you don't want to do the "newbie" camp, you can attend the veteran training sessions (which are bike/run) but still learn a lot just by meeting and talking with people with a wide variety of tri experience.

I was in the same boat last year, had ran, had cycled, never swam. Did my first Olympic TRI last year and fell in love. Plan on doing 3 of them this year. I would attend as many events as you can within the group. If you have the time do them all. I also think volunteering at one would be beneficial too. Brick workouts are amazing to do and fun at the same time. If you have never really swam laps before it will kick your butt so you will need to get into that asap.
