Hi gang!!
So, I'm out here at Cedar Point with one bar on their wireless network, and my first order of business is to give a shout out to all of you that are racing, volunteering and iron-fanning this weekend!! (and all of you that have trained with us over the summer!!!) I'm so excited to be able to just take it all in this year!! If you aren't up with the latest, I chose not to race, as I am just not trained enough to complete a full distance triathlon right now. I couldn't down-grade to the half, nor defer to 2012, so, such is life! I decided to pick up my packet, and of course, in the moment, I'm very tempted to drive home to get my bike and just DO IT! But, when I step back and honestly assess, I just am not prepared to race this distance now. It's been a crazy few weeks, and work is sucking the life force out of me. But I digress ...
I just wanted to share a few things. First off, I have 3 Triabetes peeps here racing! 2 are doing the half, and one is doing the full. They come from Hawaii, CA, and GA. I put out a call for help with borrowing a bike, to save them hundreds in bike shipping, and YOU GUYS STEPPED UP!!!!! I am just ... just so very impressed with this community!!! I had several people offer up sizes close to the needed 54cm, but in the end, John Norris and Ed Slovenkay had the 54cm rides that they so very generously are lending to my friends. I am absolutely verklempt with emotion over you helping out in securing rides for my friends. In addition, Bike Authority has helped all three of them in getting their ride's fit and, for one, transported. Thanks to Sherm, Sean, Doug, Chris, Mike and the entire BA crew for their presence, mad skillz, and help in making this work for these guys, who traveled a long way to race here in "my" town! YOU GUYS -ALL OF YOU!! - ROCK!!!! And a huge thanks to those that even offered, it really means a lot!
I recall this time last year I got out here and realized I'd left my Dexcom (Glucose monitor) charger and my insulin at home. Much to my surprise, I had offers from people I knew only through FB, to bring it out to me! Specifically, Elizabeth Hansen ... it brought tears to my eyes! (I ended up getting a save from a fellow diabetic, and triabetes friend for the insulin, and turned the dexcom off until race day, so I was good!) Again, this is an amazing community and I'm so proud to be part of it!!
Turned out my friend had an extra room and John Norris was looking for a room - the same friend needing a bike! So, they were able to help each other! Andrea wanted to be sure that I offered it out to any CTC person who might need it, before releasing it.
So, while I am ever so slightly tempted to drive home and get my bike tomorrow, and race on Sunday, I think that better judgement will prevail, and I plan to go for a 13.1 mile run on Saturday while people are riding and driving the course. I'm really looking forward to Ironfanning and cheering for everyone!!! I'll be here to the blessed end!! I have cowbells - 3! - and will wear my CTC kit (avert your eyes! I've been in "taper" for 7 weeks!!!!). I'm totally stoked to bring my manic energy to our TEAM SPIRIT tent!!!
If you see anyone in TRIABETES gear, please give them a warm, CTC shout out! It made the world of difference for me last year, to have peeps at virtually every turn!!! Vic is doing the half (in prep for Kona - a lotto winner!). Annie is doing the full - Let's give her some LOVE!!! This will be her 2nd IM distance - she finished the brutal IMSG!!! AND, her last name is BACON!! How can someone with the name Bacon NOT be awesome??? You can call her the Baconator Last, and certainly not least, is Andrea Huston, who I think is wearing her Hawaii club kit, but I'm trying to get her to wear a Triabetes visor so she can be ID'd by you guys. She's doing the half and hopes for a 6:30 time.
So many friends doing this race ... when I think of how awesome it will be to cheer you all on, it's easy to let the sadness of not racing be overshadowed by the joy I'll have in iron-fanning this race. Plus, this morning I added Akron Marathon to my race calendar and am feeling a bit more encouraged, as I focus just on my running for a bit. For the past year, I've had an Ironman on the calendar - FOUR of them - and I don't quite know what do do without having one in my sights. So, ahem, I am going to try to get into IMFL 2012. Some down time. Some Olys. Lots of running (BR100!) and then a do-again of IMFL - being more prepared for COLD this time!!
So, that's my rambling post to you. I am so happy to be part of this amazing club and meet so many wonderful, kind and generous people. I really needed this. Right now. I AM blessed!! It's going to be a great weekend and I'm wishing all of you the very best of luck in meeting your goals. Have a super race everyone!!!
