Just read a great article posted on slowtwitch by Jordan Rapp about Kona. Here is the question it raises....is it good for the sport of triathlon to have its "world championship" at the same location and on the same course every year? Or, is it good for the professional athletes in triathlon to have the race there? Consider that if you are not suited to ride/run in the heat on a flat course with (typically) strong winds that you will never be world champion, even if you could perhaps woop everyone's tail on a mountainous course of the same distance. My opinion is that WTC would like this race to remain the "world championship" to maximize race entries and create its desired "brand." Could this "word championship" format be improved for the pro triathletes in the sport? Jordan Rapp thinks so, and so do I. Read for yourself and form your own opinion (big ups to Rapp for putting this out there): www.slowtwitch.com/Opinion/The_Preeminence_of_Kona_2305.html
