I say my husband has done 7 Ironman distance races. Boring solution? Yes, but it is simple and true. BTW, I would have said Batmen. : ) Tomato, tomato.

@mrosenb, I think you're on the right track. I usually take this route with proper nouns and trademarks (unless the company has a specific guideline, like "Prii" for more than one Toyota Prius).
So, "Ironmans"
Nothing wrong with writing around it either.

Yes, Ironmans. But, I prefer to say that someone has completed "7 full triathlons." ;-)

Awesome debate.
I say "I have done 2 Ironmans." Most of the time I like to use a less confusing phrase though such as "I am a 2-time Ironman."
If I am hanging out with Durno and Reddy I would say "I am an Ironman hanging out with 2 Ironmen."
So I definitely differentiate between the people and the race itself.

If I'm hanging out with Durno and Reddy, I say, "I am an Ironman hanging out with two rotten Steeler fans."

So Phil, being a 2-time Ironman you would never want to express this by saying that you have done two Ironmen, for this would have a completely different reading for you. It reminds me of that t-shirt that says "I do triathletes not triathlons." Exactly. Completely different meaning. I like to do Ironmans not Ironmen.

Durno and Reddy are Stealers Fans? Oh man, I am so disappointed, asthey seemed like such nice guys. I guess if they were born in Pittsburgh we could consider it a birth defect.
