Hey everyone,
I'm new to CTC, and got my first taste of the club attending the Mohican training weekend. Kicked my butt and loved it. Just thought I'd put it out there that this newbie is doing the Pirate Tri in Fairport this Sunday. I'm very nervous about this heat and the fact that it's kept me indoors all week! Any sage words of advice? -Heidi

Hi Heidi, We haven't met yet, but hopefully we will at the tri on Sunday. I'll be wearing my red CTC t-shirt pre-race.
As for advice, don't start the race dehydrated. Make sure you are drinking water up to the start and continue to drink on the bike and run. Take comfort in the fact that the race is in the morning, so it won't be full heat of the day. It also helps that it is a shorter distance, so you won't be at it for hours. You probably won't even notice the heat until the run portion. If you start feeling light headed while you are running, don't be afraid to walk. No race is worth getting heat stroke over. Good luck and hope you have a wonderful race!

Heidi Jen is right - be sure to start hydrated and you should feel like you are over-hydrating on the bike - think about 1-1.5 bike bottles per hour on the bike - then on the run take in a full cup of fluid at every opportunity - also ice is your friend - stuff it everywhere you can on the run

Wow! Thanks for the water advice.. I would have thought that amount of water would be too much. I will definitely be sure to force myself to drink more. This is my second tri, and first one in the hot, hot summer! I biked and ran last night and my head just felt crazy after I was done. This is going to be a major study in balanced hydration me thinks.

Heidi - make sure that the "water" is actually poweraid or gatorade or some other electrolyte replenishment drink -

Yes, Jim has a good point. Don't drink so much the day before that you flush out all of your good electrolytes. I can't drink Gatorade type products when I race, but before and after work great for me. I'm sure you'll find your own right mix. Good luck!

I'll be racing with my wife. I've always popped ice in a bottle and after I rack my bike, I dump half of it into my accelerade bottle to cool it down. Then I dump a powder of accelerade into the ice bottle and it usually melts by the time I get to it. I also suggest some sodium tablets like Succeed...I can bring extra if you want.
