Well I did it.
I thought I had 2 options. Run the full and go for 3:30 or do half because of calf.
Calf was sore up to race day but my wife gave me a 3rd option.
I went with a friend who has done 6 marathons but never under 4 hours. She said why don't you run with him? Then he asked me to help him pace and get under 4 hours. So that is what i did.
I decided to "run" it instead of "race" it. I have never done a race where I could actually have fun and enjoy it.
It was a crazy event. 30,000 runners 50,000 spectators. All in an already congested city. Part of race was run on the freeway which they closed off. It tripled the time to get to start. Got there 5 minutes before the start.
I was in a corral 10 behind what I signed up for with my friend. One good thing was I passed 50 people for every one person who passed me." it made me feel fast"
I have heard there is a "wall" at mile 20. I felt the best at mile 20. If I hit it I hit it at mile 23-25.
I ended up doing it at 3 hours 56 minutes. 8:51 pace. 1 minute slower per mile than for a 3:30. My calf hurt from mile 2 on but it never got"really bad" where I could not run on it. I just could not really push off for real speed.
My "cardio engine" was never pressed. I could talk with people and laugh the whole time. Though my "first" was not a "BQ" . I am glad I made my first marathon one I enjoyed.
At the finish line I went into Mission Bay for a swim. Icey water felt good. I was the only one who did. It was nice to run in a Tri suit that I could swim in.
I also feel that now I have a measuring stick for doing a "BQ" and seems within reach.
This was a great race as for weather and location. I have never been in or around such a huge event. it had an aura that made it seem easy the whole way. All 26 miles were lined with spectators and Rock Bands.
Now time to bike focus for Mussleman but the rest of this week I am in Murrietta Hot Springs at a conference center that has actual mineral Hot Springs you can relax in.
It felt good except for really bad sunburn
thanks for all the input on this race. I am a little bummed about not hitting the 3:30 but it feels cool to have done a Marathon.
