Could anyone offer advice on purchasing a triathlon bike for the 1st time? Right now I'm looking at the Felt B16...I found it on sale for $1500 from $2000.

Working on the assumption that you are buying the bike from a shop, and the bike fits you (because proper bike fit is of paramount importance IMO), I'd have to give the Felt B16 the thumbs up. I am a Felt owner so I am somewhat partial, but the bike was very fairly priced, and performs flawlessly.
Mind the plug, but I bought my bike at Bike Authority and would rate my experience at that shop a perfect 10.

x2 on the Felt B16 and the great experience at Bike Authority.
I have a 2009 B16 and I love it. Great entry level tri bike that doesnt seem so entry level. The rider is still entry level.

I think the Felt B16s are hard to beat for what you are paying. Good luck!

I'm also looking at the 2011 Cervelo p1 (tri bike) and the 2010 Cervelo road bike that is set up for easy tri bike conversion. That's actually they're selling point that it's the only bike that can convert successfully. Has anyone tried converting bike over in the past? Worth the extra effort? I'd like both a road and tri bike but can't really afford it right now.

I ride a Felt road bike and a Merlin TT bike - but its not the brand that is important - it is how the bike fits you AND your riding style - When I bought my bikes I was able to have test ride several brands/models on the same day - I went through a fitting and each bike was set up to my dimensions - then I rode them and could feel the difference - and let the bike chose me - Really you will feel the difference - you want to make sure the purchase is right for you

Thanks, everyone. After a much needed car repair I've decided to lower my budget. I guess I need to earn the nice bike once my performance can match it. So if anyone has a lightly used bike 52-54 cm I'm in the market. Or, if there is some bike black market I'm also interested.

I have a frame and wheels for $400 that you just need to add components. Let me know if you want to take a look.

I'm definitely interested in taking a look at the bike. My unexpected bike death has left me with no ride, and I'm getting really anxious to get out there already! Let me know when's a good time. Thanks!
