So this may seem totally stupid, but how do you read race results? I competed in the North Shore border wars, and am not sure what my final time was. What does "Time Back " mean? Also the women started 10 minutes after the men, I know my swim did not take 20 min! So do I subtract 10 min off my total time? I was bib number 20, and placed 40 overall. Thanks in advance.

Assume you wore a chip - the times quoted in the results are net - that is the time has been adjusted to account for your actual wave start time - the time back indicates the time difference between the start of the first wave and the time when you crossed the initial timing mat - Question on you swim time - did you cross a timing mat at the start of the swim? if so the swim time is the time from when you crossed that mat until you crossed the next mat - usually at the entrance to the Transition zone - so it includes the run time from the water to the mat - if ther was no mat at the start of the swim - the swim time is determined by taking the time recorded when you cross the mat at the entrance to the transition minus the offset for the start of your wave - (assumes you started with the correct wave and started swimming immediately) Does that help?

There was no mat at the entrance to swim, only into the transition. I started 10 minutes after the first wave ( there were only two waves). So it looks like I take 10 minutes off the final time they have listed ( I add up all the times and it equals 1:41, so adjust 10 minute start, and true time is 1:31min ?) www.champracing.org/files/BORDERWAR.HTM

Jim is right. They should have already accounted for the time you had to wait for your wave to start in you times posted on-line. If you look at the time that is all the way to the righton the results list that is your final time, with all adjustments.
Mistakes happen though. If you think there is no way your swim was 20 min. and should have been 10 you can always e-mail the race director. I looked at the results and I have to admit it seems strange that there are so many 20 minute swim splits for all of the women on a swim that is well under 1/2 mile. The woman that won the race is (I think) the only one under 20 min. for the swim.
EDIT: It looks like there was a timing mistake. In the results I saw the name of a female that had an unusually slow time. A google seach showed that her swim time was likely off by about 10 minutes. I'd e-mail the race director.
