All summer long I've been thinking this would be my first tri in three years, until Jen reminded me that I did this one in 2008 on a lark. I think I've done this race maybe six times now.
I got there at 6 am--literally the first car in the lot. My task was to get Jen the best spot in transition; I did that and snagged the second for myself. Right by the exit. Otherwise I didn't get anything for being there first.
I got my crap set up while I waited for Jen and the baby. They came about a half hour later, then grandma and grandpa a little later than that. The G'rents job was to watch Will, and Will's job was to be a cute baby and smile at people. Jen's job was to go fast, so everyone had something to do today.
As we approached the 8:00 start time the skies looked upon us with anger, and sure enough the race was delayed for about a half hour while some weather blew over. The RD kept us nicely updated, but he was dressed like a pirate and looked like he was enjoying his puffy shirt a little too much.
We finally got things going. Captain Morgan shortened the swim from 500m to 250m in deference to the winds and current, but it was basically a flail-fest anyway. It was all the fun of Lake Placid condensed into five minutes. Lots of breast-strokes and side strokes and some strokes I've never seen before. I swam through all that and was rewarded with having to run the length of the swim back to the transition.
It started to rain as I got up to speed on the bike, out on Fairport Nursery road. I felt pretty good. Now, as this is a big race for newbies, there were people from earlier waves all over the road. People: ride to the right, pass on the left. This positioning foul actually bugs me more than drafting, because at least with drafting people are going faster.
I saw Jenny on the way back into Fairport. She had her fierce look going on and I could tell she was on the hunt, mowing down the girls in her AG like a Terminator. No emotion, no remorse, no stopping.
Garmin told me I rode a 21.5 mph pace. I should have been a little faster; maybe I need to do a better job of shaving my legs or something.
They changed the run course since I did this last, basically running it in reverse. After a natty little hill coming out of the park it all felt downhill. Took about a mile to get my legs under me and I ended up running 7:50s, which was ok.
So, I checked on the grandparents and baby; Will was delighting the audience, so I went back to check on Jen's finish. She came tearing around the final corner, and I swear she was leaving flaming tracks on the ground! She took third in her AG--4 months after becoming a mommy! WOW!
