Any tips for OWS training? Doing my first tri at Linwood Park Aug. 15. Thought I was doing great in the pool, (could finally complete a 750m swim!) Hit the lake Friday and seriously crashed. Way more effort, big waves made me sick, doubting my ability to do this big time! Tell me I'm not crazy!

The number one tip is to do it over and over. It will get easier. Learn to breath on both sides to avoid taking a wave in the face. Keep in mind, your nerves might have gotten the better of you yesterday. We swim on Tuesday's at 6:30 with about 30 people. Many of us can give you pointers there if you can make it.
Pool swimming is very different. you do not know how much rest you get with the wall every 25 yards. If you get back in the pool, work at pushing off the wall very little or none at all.

you're not crazy - you are just like all of us that came to the sport from a running or biking background - by all means get out in open water before the race as often as you can - you need to swim OW frequently to get rid of that fear - Start your swim much slower than you think you should and get into a rhythm - realize at the start of the race (or even a training workout in the open water) your nerves are amped up and the adrenaline is flowing - work to slow your HR down to a point that it is under control - also swim to the outside so that you aren't getting bounced around by other swimmers - - it breaks your rhythm -

I agree that it would be beneficial to get in the open water once or twice per week up until race week. I was pretty nervous in open water my first season in the sport....most of my training focused on simply learning to relax. Think long and smooth strokes. Try not to get caught up in fighting with the waves or other swimmers. Also, don't be afraid to take a couple of breaststrokes or backstrokes every so often if it helps to keep your HR down and stay relaxed.
In my case, it took me ~1 year of swimming 2-3 times/week in the pool and 1x/week in open water before I got comfortable in the swim.

Thanks for the feedback. I hit the lake twice since posting. Once the water was like glass, no problems. Then moderate waves, did better than last time. Not being able to see is freaking me out less, hard to stay in line, so swimming extra distance! Any estimate on distance between tree point and house point at Columbia Beach?
