Hey all you Newbies!
I am the new Newbies Director taking over for Jen Collister (thanks Jen for all you have done!) for the 2010 year. I wanted to tell you a little about my self and officially offer my services to all the new members of the CTC, those new to triathlons (Newbies), and anyone else who wants some advice / skills to move up to the next level (whatever your goals are).
All the events that we are going to be rolling out this season for the Newbies will be geared towards helping them learn what to expect when they take the plunge. As always, any member may join in for some fun & fellowship as well as a good workout. If anybody wants to volunteer to help out, you are always welcome. Just send me an email clevetriclub@yahoo.com or post on the forum.
Hopefully, with some new skills, encouragement, and confidence learned from the CTC Newbie programs, the new event on your schedule will be a very positive one and not one fraught with anxiety of the unknown.
A little about me:
I have been competing in swimming, cycling, and running (among other sports) for over 20 years. I swam and ran competitively in High School and then picked up cycling while at the University of Dayton (who now has a great Triathlon team, by the way). I completed my first Tri in college on a freezing cold morning in May with nothing more than a Speedo and a near case of hypothermia (39 deg on the bike!). I tried to figure it out all on my own and made a bunch of rookie mistakes. I settled into cycling as my primary sport and did very well. I worked my way up into the elite ranks of cycling, chalking up several podium appearances at National Time Trials and State Mountain Bike Championships among others. In 2005, my daughter, Kate, was born and the amount of time needed to race at the elite level was no longer practical. I decided to revisit my roots and combine my early passions with cycling: start racing Triathlons! I quickly realized that triathlons were made for me and I have excelled ever since. Lots of success for myself and my sponsors!
I have coached the University of Dayton and the Case Western Reserve University Cycling Teams as well as many individual cyclists over the years. I was a swim coach for a City of Cleveland community teams, taught literally thousands of kids how to swim, as well as trained dozens of lifeguards and Water Saftey Instructors with the Red Cross. I coached middle and long distance runners at the high school level as well.
I joined the CTC looking for someone to keep me from drowning in Lake Erie during the open water swims and found more than I anticipated. I found the CTC was a wonderful, supportive, and educational club that took the extra step to help Newbies not just survive their first triathlon but get them hooked on the sport.
Now, I am taking over the Newbie program with a great tradition and am trying to continue the successes of those before me. We have a lot of great programs in the works for 2010 and I personally invite you to come out to meet us, learn some new skills, take part in some great workouts, and meet some new friends. The CTC is literally the best group of athletes around!
Please feel free to ask any question (nothing is stupid) or pick my brain. Hope to see you out at any of our events and at the races!
