Just wanted to pass this along for those who may be interested...
This should be a pretty good informational clinic on Trail Running by Nick Billock who has lots of trail running experience!
Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009
Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm
Location: Kendall Shelter, about 2 miles east of Akron-Peninsula Road
Starting at 11am at the Kendall Shelter besides Kendall Lake, Nick will give about a 30min talk about trail running. Following the talk, Nick will lead everyone on one of the most beautiful trails in the whole Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Salt Run Trail. The run will be about 4 miles in length and will take about an hour.
Topics Nick will cover:
1. Trail Shoes 101
2. What to wear...and what NOT to wear
3. Preventing blisters by being prepared for wet feet and stream crossings while trail running
4. Do's and Don'ts of Trail Running
5. Trail Etiquette
6. Socks
7. Other trail options within the CVNP
8. Navigation on the trails and how to read markings
9. Trail Safety
10. Hydration solutions while on the run
This is not a "Running 101" talk so it's expected that you can run 3-5 miles already. Of course, if you'd like to attend and not go on the trail run, you are welcome to do so. Trail running is very different than running on the roads so don't worry about pace and how fast you can run. Have fun, enjoy the trails, and stay on your feet! It IS possible that your feet will get wet on this trail but normally, it doesn't have shoe-sucking mud...maybe just some muddy spots.
Vertical Runner has graciously offered to pass on a discount to anyone who attends this event. You will get a coupon to use. In addition, Nick will raffle off a door prize to those in attendance courtesy of Vertical Runner.
Note: the Kendall Shelter is covered but NOT enclosed. There are bathrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic tables to sit on but if it's really cold out, be prepared to keep yourself warm while standing around. As well, dress warm for the trail run. Rule of thumb is that you should dress as you would if it were 15F warmer outside. For example: if it's 35F out, your running clothes should be what you'd wear in 50F weather.
Directions: if coming from Akron-Peninsula Rd, the entrance to Virginia Kendall is about 2 miles up Truxell Road...entrance on right. If coming from Route 8, take Truxell Road west off of State Rd/Akron-Cleveland Road. Here is a link to a Google Map of the area: maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.220405,-81.509843&spn=0.018981,0.038581&z=15
This talk is targeted at the person who wants to start trail running but doesn't know where to start or who has questions about what to wear from shoes, socks, other apparel, and other gear such as hydration/nutrition equipment. It's also a great way to check out a great area of trails. Salt Run is only one of many trails in the Virginia Kendall area.
Question? Please ask! This is an open event so please feel free to share and invite others!
