The USAT National Challenge is back!!!
Here's how it works:
The National Challenge Competition (NCC) is designed to get triathletes excited about off-season training at the club level. Tri Clubs across the country go head-to-head to see who can log the most training miles during the competition.
The NCC will feature three sessions, each one month in duration, from December to February. Clubs will record their training miles and submit them on NCC site for automatic calculation and ranking.
All sessions will include swim, bike, and run, but one sport will be highlighted for each session. The winning club for each session is determined by the greatest number of miles logged during that session for that month's discipline. There are also prizes for the first club to reach the benchmark mileage for each session, and Overall Combined Mileage for a club at the end of the three months.
DECEMBER IS SWIM MONTH (club must reach 750 miles - that means all of you in Rob's classes better be in! )
JANUARY IS BIKE MONTH (club must reach 10,000 miles)
FEBRUARY IS RUN MONTH (club must reach 3,000 miles)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You MUST be a USAT member in good standing to participate.
All mileage counts from 2 miles to 200 miles, so as you train this (off)season, please consider keeping track of your mileage and submitting it for our national challenge!
If you are interested in participating, please email me at CTCUSATchallenge@gmail.com. Please include the following:
-First and Last Name -USAT Membership # -preferred email address -age as of December 2009
I have attached a very handy spreadsheet that you will need to convert your training to miles. Miles can be submitted daily or weekly but will need to be in the correct format.
If you have any questions feel free to post them here or email directly.Attachments:

Tracking sheet is available here if you would like! www.clevetriclub.com/files/usat_ncc_tracking_09-10.xlsI managed to get in a 2500M Swim this morning, so the club is down to only needing 748.45 more miles in December! I'm glad to see it seems like more people are participating. With all the people in Rob's swim class we should kick butt in the swimming!

Great Job EVERYONE!!!!! Jen when you go to Rob's class on Sunday can you announce this and ask everyone to sign up? I only have a few peeps from the class signed up. Even if everyone only reported what they did on Sundays it would help us compete against the Sunny states like FL, CA and AZ. THANKS!!!!!!!

How do people count hours on the trainer as miles? Does USAT have rules for this?

Typically for trainer miles, I will use a very conservative estimate of what my average hourly speed would be (when my computer attached to rear wheel does not register it properly).

Here is USAT's answer Alison: Q. My club uses indoor trainers for winter cycling, but they don't have computers. Can we estimate our mileage based on time? A. Sorry, but that would not be a fair or accurate way to log bike miles since everyone rides at different power outputs and rates of speed. Also, there is no way to make sure that all stationary bikes and trainers are set up to provide the same resistance. Please ensure that if you are riding an indoor trainer your computer is accurately calibrated, and that you actually have a computer in the first place. Also for anyone with swim questions: Q. How many yards in a mile? Seriously, I'm a swimmer and we sometimes count a mile as 1650 yards. A. There are 1,760 yards in one mile. The NCC does not use 'pool miles' (something I had not heard of until today, so I guess I can't be much of a swimmer) so please make sure you count your miles correctly. Please realize these are the official rules from USAT. Whatever information you send me is assumed to be accurate and this is on the honor system. I will not be asking for pictures of bike computers or watches for the run mileage. Thanks! Tracie

Are we actively participating in this challenge? Lord knows that I have been terrible about reporting my distances.
Today, I actually checked the standings. I am not listed as a participanty and our totals look like they have not been updated in some time???

CTC does not get a discount to USAT. USA Triathlon offers a one-year Adult Membership for $39. All information can be found here. www.usatriathlon.org/member-servicesOnce you get your USAT number, email me that and your age and we will get you added to our spreadsheet. A club rep will enter your data into the official race tracker. Per the official rules- Odometers/computers must be used to track all miles for the bike. Athletes who use a trainer, must place their odometer on the back wheel to track their speed and distance.
