Can anyone advise about wearing a wetsuit for the Portage Lakes Olymic on 9/13? It's my first Olympic and I've got two issues: 1) cold; 2) buoyancy. I do not have a tri-specific suit, just one for diving (a cheap one at that). It's a little constrictive for swimming so,, unless I'm going to get a lot of warmth or help with my swimming out of it, I'm thinking of not using it. Can anyone advise, especially about the Portage Lakes water temp.

It is an interior lake, so it should be plenty warm to swim without a wetsuit.

Eric,
How tall and heavy are you? You're welcome to use mine as my season is finished. Just don't poke any holes in it ;-)
shoot me a email.

Now... if we could just do something about the bright yellow orb in the sky that hampered our ability to see when swimming east....

What about the weeds?! I was thinking I'd come out of the water looking like swamp thing!

Those weeds were horrible! I had visions of drowing... Kar-Ming really saved by butt, because I have a feeling that swim would have been misery but for the suit.

I felt like the weeds were alive and trying to wrap themselves around my arms and legs. Ugh! The deep water was so much nicer!

Ditto Kim!! Being forewarned helped a bit, but it was a little unsettling! Thanks for the shout out! Good job today! Hope it was what you wanted

the weeds sucked, so did the sun...the only thing missing was a bull shark grabbing me by the ankle! Nice lake though.

Last year, a friend and I discovered there is a trick to navigating while swimming east into the sun, using the "notch" in the group of trees on shore as a reference point to the far buoy. This year, HFP lined the buoy up with the notch just like last year. It sounds weird, but I found it is much easier to look up and see the notch than to pick up the buoy in the glare. Something to keep in mind for next year. I have no answer for the weeds.

People say you must "face your fear" in order to get rid of it... haha well i am totally not scared of seaweed anymore, thanks Portage Lake. The weeds were SO much worse than last year, ugh. Any other tips for slighting in the sun?? I think I took about 5 years of my sense of sight yesterday... thanks!

wow...never hit weeds there before...kind of freaked me out...
i am a pretty decent swimmer, but even i got a little discombobulated...i was worried for the peeps that were nervous about the swim to start with...fortunately around the first buoy and they were gone...yikes...
