I heard a rumor that due to the tragic accident last year, during the bike course all participants must stop at all the stop signs... does any one know if this is true?!?! Thanks for any information you may have -also note that the bike course ending is slightly different from last year due to the accident as well, not going down Shaker to finish. Thanks!

No clue, but, if its true, that's a joke... a race where you have to stop at stop signs ?? Please.

I am now hearing that the Bellefaire is a 3 mile run and a 12 mile bike RIDE not a RACE and that participants need to obey all traffic laws... whatever that means... I have found one news clip online stating it's a ride and I left a voicemail at JCB. Ugh! Any one else have any news?

Is anyone else doing this race? After reading that you have to stop at the signs I'm really having second thoughts about doing this one.

Yea that's true. Someone posted that on facebook that it is not a race which is dumb. Why would I pay to casually ride 12 miles and have to obey traffic laws?! I believe it also said the intersections wouldn't be blocked.

I'll ask today when I pick up my packet. If that's the case I just go to Lorain and watch.

Disclaimer: I drank way too much coffee this afternoon. I'm usually not one to post highly negative opinions, but, what an incredibly STUPID event this will be. Really - how can you call it a biathlon but not a race. dumb dumb dumb. Just cancel the stupid event or simply stick with a run. dumb dumb dumb. Can I be any more clear about my opinion here ? I've seen some doozies in my time, but this ignorance takes the cake. How pitiful. How stupid.

As for the bike and Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws...... Anytime you are riding on Ohio roadways, you are always supposed to obey all traffic laws...... Period...... Race, Tour, Fund Raising Event..... My understanding is that you can always be cited for a violation.... As for the Bellefaire JCB Biathlon, its a bummer its not a race.... Their presence in the community is to help those in need, so please come out to enjoy the event and help them raise some money...... Maybe, we can see this event as a challenge if they are still handing out awards. Who's the fastest runner, and the strongest bike rider obeying all the "road rules"......

That's why they put Police at intersections. Sorry to be so negative here, Brian, but, I stand behind my coffee-induced rant !!

I'm one of the biggest "follow traffic rules" and "what you do reflects positively or negatively on all of us" guys out there, but that is why we get police (and pay them time and a half at least) to control intersections. Police directing traffic trumps signs/signals.
This is certainly still a worthwhile event from a community standpoint, but perhaps it's time to call it a "tour" or "social ride" or something like that. It's apparently not a race anymore.

If they call it a biathlon then it should be treated as a race. Otherwise call it a bike tour and run. I agree with Mark's coffee induced rant. When police are blocking intersections then I would assume that I can go through the light. Futhermore, if they give awards than it is a race ANGIE

Ok, I just got back from picking up my packet, and everyone there said that it is a bike "race" and you will be timed. They also said don't believe everything you read, they will have mostof the streets blocked with the exception of maybe 2 stops.
So I'm gonna give it a shot on Sunday and see how it goes.

Good luck to ya. I truely hope you get to "race" this thing - if that's what you are paying for.

I didn't catch this thread before heading out to Bellefaire this AM. With the exception of last year, I've done this event every year since 2005 and it's definitely been one of my favorites. This year I noticed no difference than the previous years in terms of the race logistics. There were police/volunteers at all the intersections so that as we ran and rode, we didn't have to stop. I know that even in 2005 they (Howard from HMA) cautioned us that there is always a small possibility that you may have to stop at an intersection if that's what the police are signalling. This has (and was again today) communicated as the exception as opposed to the rule and I've always taken this to be just an extra caution to make sure the participants are as well informed and prepared as can be. This event always seems to draw a wide range of racers from recreational to competitive and so in my opinion, being overly informative on what the racers should expect is a good thing.
As far as my results today, my run was slower than usual (expected since my running has been nearly non-existent recently) and I felt strong on the bike (also expected since that's all I've been doing these days). I had the 66th fastest run time and the 13th fastest bike time which was good enough for 27th overall. Congrats to Brian who took 2nd place overall!
