was anyone REALLY upset at how long we had to tread water before the start and the sheer overcrowding of the swim? it threw off my whole race. my legs were burning before the swim even started which continued to affect the rest of my race. i feel i was well trained for the event but was not expecting that. for a minute i panicked treading water because there was not even room to do so and people kept knocking me under. i actually considered getting out and scrapping the race. there was no room to even do a stroke until you rounded the buoy., unless you were one of the lucky ones to have position on the outside of the pack. i just cant believe i would be the only one that has an issue with this. feedback would be appreciated.

Speaking only for myself, i think the downtown race kinda sucks. Mickey's race out at Mentor Headlands typically held a week later is the better local triathlon imo.

Remembering that course from several years ago - if its the same - I agree. The little square that you all have to swim around is a joke. I've always felt that the downtown event is not worth the $$$. Its too bad because it has so much potential.

That was my first triathlon (super sprint), and I had only been swimming for 1 month, so I remember that treading in the water for that long kinda sucked, and it was very congested. I doubt it is something they plan to fix. I wanted to do that race this year (because it is fun racing downtown), but I just couldn't bring myself to pay that kind of money for an event. The Super Sprint at the Cleveland Tri cost the same or more than the Olympic at Greater Cleveland....

My friend Nicole did the super sprint around 10 years ago and she was so freaked out by how long they had to tread water that she vowed to never do another triathlon, and she hasn't. Such a shame.

thank you everyone for your feedback . i feel better i was just so discouraged after that race and quite frankly p.o.'d when it was over. i thought someone should say something to the powers that be. it is a real shame that jen's friend gave up tri's after that. it is a great sport . i guess it just goes to show ya that we are all going to have different experiences at races and that is part of the journey. thank you

I've been told that folks have been giving advice to the "powers that be" of that race for several years; however, it falls on deaf ears...

I didn't think it was so bad. I thought the gentle treading water was a nice warm up. However, I am a very seasoned swimmer and treading water is like a walk in the park for me. My husband, on the other hand, did this for his first tri and he is a very weak swimmer and had never swam open water before. It was tough, but nothing unmanageable for him (although he was wearing wetsuit pants which helped).
Keep in mind, you are not required to tread water that long. There were many people that either hung onto the dock until the start or even stood on the dock until right beforfe the start and then at the 30 second count down jumped in and got into positionn, and/or dove in and started swimming right at the start. Something to keep in mind for strategy if you do the race again next year.
One thing they did do this year, was combine men and women. This made the swim and starting position very crowded. Last year, the men and women in the super-sprint went off in different waves. I am hoping, with some feedback, they will go back to spliting men and women up again next year.
