I'm hoping this rather robust group of MD's, PhD's and BTDT's (been there done that's) can provide some help here - I have been experiencing a problem over the last 3 weeks during very long workouts - 6 hours+ - late in the workout it starts with a tickle in the back of the throat when I inhale - like I aspirated something and it is stuck in my throat (but I did not) - then I'll start coughing leading to the point where I am choking - I'll stop the run or bike - continue to cough till I get control then start up the workout again - I do have exercised induced asthma and take albuterol and pulmicort - I'll take the albuterol before exercise and at 1.5 - 2 hour intervals during the workout. My allergist does not think the problem is related to EIA but believes it is a mechanical problem related to what I have eaten during the workout - I eat p/b sandwiches cut into quarters at 20-30 min intervals (i have cut off the crust) - fluids include Gatorade endurance and a mulotdexetrin mix - at 15 - 20 min intervals - by the time the coughing starts I have consumed 2-2 1/2 sandwiches and 2.5 liters of fluids - any thoughts

Might wanna consult with your physician for a different, more potent steroid probably. Maybe it's more then just exercise induced asthma

Some asthma specialist think that acid reflux can cause asthma like symptoms. Others say that is a bunch of crap. There is little to no research that backs up the acid reflux claims, but some patients (my dad who had GERD for instance) believe it helps to treat the acid reflux.
Maybe you could experiment with some heartburn meds before long workouts. I personally use apple cider vinegar for heartburn rather than medication, but not everyone likes the home remedy route.
edited to add: It also seems that people who take albuerol regularly are more likely to develop a problem with frequent heartburn. I can't site my sources, I am just an asthmatic that has searched for answers to similar problems.
