Back in October I was fortunate enough to put on a run clinic through the help of the CTC. After the clinic I asked for a few volunteers to be "test subjects." Jason Davis and Ed Slovenkay both raised their hands.
Over the next 6 months both of these fine athletes worked diligently on a training plan aimed to help them establish a PR. Without hesitation, I can say that both of these guys are two of the finest individuals to work with. They hit EVERY key workout and more importantly, hit their paces spot on.
Oh sure, they had their doubts - "Mark, why are we running so ez on our non-focus days?" but they persevered. On one or two days I had to give them a gentle scolding for getting a bit off track [read - running crazy track workouts in January - sorry guys]. Nonetheless, they really were what I would call model students
On race day, Ed Slovenkay ran a phenomenal race, besting his PR by over 12 minutes. Jason was on track to do even better, but at mile 13 he ran into trouble with a stabbing knee pain. He tried everything to shake the pain but nothing worked. Not running back wards, changing his stride, walking etc. He resigned himself to finishing the race.
Finish he did. Not what he had hoped for, but he DID finish, throwing his medal and race number into the garbage following the race in a fit of disgust. I, however, believe that Jason should hold his head high. Although the day did not work out as planned, he set out to finish what he started. Thinking about Jason's day, I can only imagine what must have been going through his mind the final 13 miles. So to you Jason, I leave you with this. Please watch and be inspired, you showed the true courage of what the word 'sport' is all about
