Ladies out there who have had children. Can you tell me how long it took before you were able to get back on the bike comfortably? I am due in late April with my first child and there is a bike trip in late June that I want to take that would require me to be able to ride 56 miles. I am thinking that it is going to take me at least a month to be ready to sit on a bike seat and June might not happen. So, I would love any feedback from others who have done this before.

It never took me that long but your comfort could vary depending on your delivery and if you biked during pregnancy. (not highly recommended I know but I never felt like I was going to fall off the stationary bike.) I wouldn'it set my goals too high, but if you're planning on aneasy 56 it might not be bad. The hardest part might be managing the babies feeding etc while you're gone. Do you have to sign up for the trip early?

i met a woman racing within months...but i had a rough delivery that included a broken tailbone so i didn't do any training for 9 months...(i probably could have biked before that but COULD NOT RUN)...
i would have to say depends on the length of the bike trip and your delivery...

Most docs will say NO exercise for 6 weeks after delivery. That allows your body to adjust back to "normal." So, you might not even be on the bike until mid June. Although, I'm sure there are ladies that jump right back into it. Just be safe. Oh - on a personal note, I didn't do my first tri until a year after my second son was born. Didn't even own a bike then, so I can't tell you how quickly I would have tried it.

I had a relatively easy delivery, and my doctor still did the standard "nothing more than walking" for 6 weeks. In fact, I even got reprimanded for walking too much...oops! :)Everyone's different, of course, but I didn't even want to go NEAR my bike for a while. Bottom line is to do what's safe, so I would ask your doc what he/she thinks. I know that my doctor said that a C-Section would be 8 weeks of nothing strenuous.

I delivered in late May and did Pedal to the Point (one way) which I think was in early/mid August. I think that was about 60 miles. If you have a relatively easy delivery and don't push it too early - and you don't plan on riding like Lance on this trip - I think you can do it.
But it is hard to leave your little one that early on - that may be the hardest part...
