I started training for my first triathlon in July/August. Since my very first run I've had a pain on the outside of my left knee that comes and goes with no discernable (to me) pattern. The pain strikes when my weight goes on the knee but subsides once I start walking, and the intensity of the pain varies from run to run. I've been hoping that increased muscle tone would strengthen the knee, but that hasn't happened. Any thoughts on what this might be and/or if I should just bite the bullet and go see a doctor? Thanks.

Sounds like an IT band issue to me...

Me too. I had it last fall...and as other on here can attest; when it gets bad...it sucks!
If it's fading between runs then it probably isn't chronic yet. Look up IT band stretching, and if you like, get a foam roller too (roller helped me a lot).
Be careful with this though, if it gets bad....you won't be able to run, period, for quite a while (weeks, sometimes months). Address it now and you might be able to nip it in the bud.

Thanks for your insights. The one trainer I spoke to in Oberlin also suspected it was an IT band problem. I'll look into the roller and get started on the stretching asap!

Susan,
I too am dealing with this pain currently. Not a lot of fun.
I have been told a lot of stretching will help. Definitely get a foam roller. You can find a 18" at Dick's Sporting Goods for $25.00. Hurts like he*#, but is a necessity.
Go to youtube and search IT Band Syndrome and you will find a lot of helpful demonstrations on proper stretches.
Good Luck!

ahhh, Mark, you sprinters place the blame way too quickly. I tend to gravitate toward running on crowned roads, improper fall build, poor shoes... Anything but IRONMAN!
