Veterans Memorial Bridge? I do a weekly 1 mile timed run on it and would like to factor in the grade to get an adjusted pace. On a related side note, is there a website for determining hill grades? I know I could just do rise/run but the cost benefit of my time is not worth it.

o.k. curiosity got the best of me so I used a very rough estimate from mapmyrun.com and computed the slope. Judging by the amount of interest this thread has going I am sure many of you are very excited to hear this so I am pleased to announce the bridge has a slope of roughly 3.4%. Thank you's are unnecessary

Brooks,
Where is the bridge your talking about? How many times do you run it during your work out? Is it half mile up then half down? I would think then the total gain would be 0% grade.
Just wondering

George,
It's the detroit-superior bridge. My time and fitness is low right now so I'm doing a short tempo run once per week. It consists of running the bridge 2 times and timing the last loop. The bridge is a half mile each way so over-back is 1 mile. You are correct that I finish where I start so the effective grade should be 0. However, I don't feel my effort on the downhill portion makes up for the slower pace on the uphill so I am trying to interpolate for that difference. Put another way, I am simply trying to formulate a time relatively equal to doing the tempo on flat ground. Yes, I could find a flat stretch of road to do this workout, I know many areas, but convenience and proximity trumps in this case.

Brooks, Ever think of trying to run faster upthe bridge? What about the wind direction, I think that would be equally important. Unless its a cross wind.

Jack,
My back is feeling good finally, it is just all those d*mn naked fat lady emails you send to me that has me unable to train.
Seriously though, B School is kicking my butt right now so I have very little time outside of that. I do get a few workouts in here and there fortunately.

George,
Yes it appears there are too many factors to interpolate so I am going to throw in a test next week on a flat stretch of road and compare.
The bottom line is I just wanted to figure out how much my tempo pace is affected by running uphill/downhill.
