What a great race. HFP really have a good one going here. The venue is in a private park right on the water. Transition is grass, nice beach, lots of shade, and a really good one loop bike course with some good climbs, tight turns, and really fun descents that keeps the athletes honest. Good riders can make up a lot of time on this course...it's not just sit in the aeros and hammer a big gear. The run starts and finishes quite nice, although they do have you run on the side of a main road in full sun for a few miles to the turnaround; it's probably the only thing that was less than great, but im just being nit picky....it's not enough to diminish the race. The vibe around the place was really positive and happy....everything seemed to go really smoothly.
I'll spare you the boring recap of my actual race. Just really impressed with HFP on this one and wanted to tell you about it. Shannon has done really well with this one. I look forward to it again next year.

I agree with Rob... this race is a keeper. The community really comes out in FULL force on this one. They were pleasant, happy and really encouraging. The volunteers were everywhere. Let's hope HFP can keep the momentum going on this one. I really enjoyed the venue and the company.
Nice job HFP and Vermillion townsfolk!!

i loved the race, everything was great but i was most impressed and entertained by the locals who were out to cheer you on and also volunteering. they were really into it and seemed to really like to have the race in their park/town.
the results were up for a few mins (without splits) and now there are down, i htink they are adding more info. but i have a question, i know what DNF and DNS mean, but what does it mean to be Missing??

Yes I thought this race was also great but am not surprised. Earlier in the week I was there in the town (my parents live out there) and they were all really excited about it and volunteering, etc. There definitely seemed like a lot of them which was nice. Hope maybe next year I can do the Oly tri instead of the Oly du.

DNF = Did Not Finish; DNS = Did Not Start (i.e. Reddy two weeks in a row!)
Echo the statements above. The results are up again.
Hey Jen - quit being so modest - she was the overall winner of the Olympic Duathlon (all those Monday bricks are paying off).
Here's my take: This race is what I envisioned Triathlon to be when I first became interested about 5 years ago. The water was rolling but not breaking, making for a fun open water swim. The bike was technical, hilly, and varied (a bit bumpy coming out of downtown) - so much fun that Rob, Scott, and I saddled up and did it again after the race. I actually really liked the run - again because the scenery was varied and the volunteers were fantastic cheerleaders (the Vermillion football team was a trip - those dudes were fun). I sounded like a broken record after the race and kept telling people how much I enjoyed this course over and over and over....
A couple other thoughts:
This race was a qualifier for something, so there were a lot of elites there - very cool to watch their fluid running strides while approaching the run turnaround.
Our folks took home a good amount of hardware - congrats CTCers.
The swim was a bit short. The sprint bike had to be short (times were too fast). The olympic bike seemed to be right on. The run course was definately long (Stern was over 6 min/mi - that never happens in a 10K). The course was unbelievably well managed. Only an idiot would get off course (Aussie !). The post race food bank was WELL stocked. Vermillion is a cool town that really embraced this event (better so than Morgantown).
Angie - thanks for the warm up run - its was just what the doctor ordered after a 2 hour run on Thursday night !
Now... onto the wings !

Can't say enough good things about HFP and their races.
Makes me want to do the Wheelie Fun series next year.

I did not race this yeserday and I hear a lot of good things. But I am troubled by what Mark says about the distances. To me it is unexcusable to have inaccurate distances. With the GPS technologicy, how can these races be marked incorrectly? It seems like we hear this way too much about distances not being correct. I do not care about the distance, just make it accurate so we can get good splits.

Sid - that used to bother me, too. But, then I realized something... the exact distances really don't matter - here's why: 1. Each race course is so different, you really can't judge performance by your time - too many variables between courses; 2. If the individual race course is the same year-after-year, you can't somewhat (all weather issues aside) evaluate your individual fitness from year to year - who cares if you ran 6.2 miles or 6.4 miles - as long as its the same as last year. 3. If your are into the USAT ranking thing, the rankings are based on how you perform against those in your race, weighted by an averaging formula - again the distances don't matter; and, finally, 4. Sometimes the course is measured in the athlete's favor and those are wonderful opportunities for new PR's !! You can then kid yourself into thinking you are really THAT fast !! I used to break my race down into splits, paces, and rankings. I don't bother anymore because there is really no comparison...

Hi Everyone, I am with Main Street Vermilion, the organization that assisted HFP with the Vermilion Harbour Triathlon. We are working to promote interest for a 2009 Vermilion Triathlon. I was referred to this forum to read the quotes about how well athletes like the Vermilion event. I help with the PR portion of promoting the event and was hoping to get quotes from athletes for future press releases and website testimonials. Anyone who is interested in being quoted can email comments to CustomerService@VermilionOhioNews.com or GaryBarnby@yahoo.com. Please include your full name, city and any comments you would like published about the race. Vermilion was very excited about hosting the triathlon and looks forward to it being an annual event.
