Registration is now open for the 2007 DeSoto American Triple-T to be held on May 25, 26 and 27 in Portsmouth, Ohio. The event sold out in 2006 and is limited to 200 participants. It's a 3-day, 4-event, ironman distance + format triathlon. You can participate as either a 2 person team or a solo. The final day is the Little Smokies HIM Distance.
Early registration fee is only $150 (and includes a DeSoto racing singlet and other goodies).
Anyone interested in doing this event?

Nathan,
I am interested in this race. It is a very tough weekend but also one that is very rewarding. Matt Collister did it this year; read his race report it is very interesting. How long does early registration go until?

I'm considering doing the Little Smokies HIM, but not the whole thing. Should be a very fun weekend.

Brooks, Early registration is $150 from now until December 1, 2006 when it goes to $175. It goes up again to $200 on May 7, 2007. I'm just not sure how fast it sells out - if it is truly limited to only 200 participants - I would think that you would need to sign up before the 12/1/06 price increase (just speculation on my part though). Matt C - when did you sign up for the 2006 TTT (i.e., I want to do all 3 days as training for IMLP - so how early do I need to sign up)? Brooks, here is the link with all the info: www.americantriple-t.com/index.php

I can't remember when, exactly.I think it was in the fall, though. I knew early on that I wanted to do it and saw no reason to wait.

I am registered for all 3 days of festivities in Portsmouth - May 25th, 26th and 27th, 2007!
Now here is my pitch to encourage others to participate - if not all 3 days then at least for the Little Smokies HIM on the 27th. I was in Huntington, WV over Labor Day weekend and decided to drive over to Shawnee State Park to check out the course. The location is awesome!. Lots of hills and trees. I drove portions of all 4 races including the race packet mentioned tough hills Thomson Hill Road and Fire Road #1. The courses did not appear any tougher than the Greater Cleveland Triathlon that I did back in August. An all around beautiful location. It is an HFP sponsored race.
Day One: 250m swim / 5 mile bike / 1 mile run
Day Two Morning: 1500m swim / 24.8 mile bike / 6.55 mile run Day Two Afternoon: 24.8 mile bike / 1500m swim / 6.55 mile run
Day Three: 1.2 mile swim / 55.5 mile bike / 13.1 mile run
Reservations: (800) 282-7275
Cabins can be rented for $149 a night (sleeps up to 7). The lodge rents for $105 to $114 a night.
Great way to spend a Memorial Day weekend.

Nathan,
I will most likely be there for the half. The TTT is too close to IMCdA unfortunately. I am looking forward to racing in that neck of the woods.

Guys,
Thanks for the love with DATT. It's a truely a mind numbing AND fun experience as you work your way through all 3 days and the 4 events.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE train on some hills in preparation for this event. I'd hate for an athlete to come not expecting some serious hillage and be a DNF. Some folks who have finished this event say it's tougher than just the standard one day IM distance.
Last year we sold out the earliest we ever had (mid April). It appears that we are on pace for that same response for the 2007 event.
I don't have a ton of time to read the message board, but I'm good at answering questions via email. Try me at scott2006 [at] hfpracing dottcom or just call. My phone # is on the website.
DATT07.....bring it!

Are the dire warnings of needing your climbing gears and that the run course is tough legit? I'm looking for something out of the ordinary flat and fast course racing.
I would be looking at either the Saturday AM or PM race - or both. How many participants do they get for just these "Int'l" distance events? Are these races run separately from the DeSoto TTT participants or simultaneously?
Speaking of, is HFP's Mountaineer Olympic hilly on the bike and run?

The Saturday and Sunday races are run simultaneously with the corresponding TTT stages. Same course, same start time, etc. There are seperate waves, if I recall, but you otherwise basically 'blend' with the DATT competion.
Wise to have a 39x25 or 23 ratio. The run is quite hilly and off road - it's a well-marked trail but some areas are pretty rough and rutted.
I'd say the general buzz on how hard it is is pretty accurate to what you'll experience.

If you want fast and flat, don't do either event. But, if you want out of the ordinary, either is good.
The Saturday AM and PM races do not have many competitors outside of the ones who are doing all 4 races. Those doing just the Olympic go after the DATT competitors. It is time trial style with about 10-15 seconds between competitors.
Mountaineer's bike and run courses are also hilly, but for the run, it doesn't happen until around mile 5 (called Devil's Hill).
HFP runs a great race at both venues.

I signed up a couple days ago for the Triple-T. I did the LS Half last year and had a great time. So I thought I would try the whole weekend this year.

I'm doing the Half on Sunday and wondered if anyone else was doing this race or the Triple T. It would be great to car pool or have someone to dine with Saturday night. Let me know.

Hi Paula, Not sure if I am going yet, I was considering dropping out of the weekend and haven't heard anthing back from HFP. Trying to find out what is going on. If I do race, it would probably just be Friday and Saturday, not really sure about Sunday, body just hasn't recovered from Arizona yet, and this is such a tough weekend. If we do go, your more than welcome to have dinner with my family, its just the wife and two young ones that are coming.

Doing the 1/2 on Sunday. Staying over in Portsmouth at the Ramada. Any ideas on where to get a good meal?

Portsmouth is about 20 miles from the race, as you're probably aware, but if you come to the park on Saturday afternoon to check out the venue, you might consider going to eat at the park lodge. Nice little restaurant.
I don't recall P'mouth having much in the way of cuillinary variety.

Matt, didn't we eat at a Wendy's in Portsmouth on the way home. No culinary variety indeed! Just look at that $.99 value menu. : )

I was there 3 years ago and there was a Fazoli's a Sonic and a Mexican place. Don't remember much else. We did Fazoils to carb load. I'm also staying at the Ramada. Tim, would love to hook up with you guys for dinner. I remember when your little ones were actually little.

I don't know what the Ramada is like or what they charge, but if I were you guys, I'd see if you can get rooms at the park lodge and cancel at the Ramada. May be a splurge - I think they run about $110 / night for a double - but I think it would be worth it. Very nice lodge, quiet (parks attract the families and kids, but I didn't think they were all that noisy last year), a beautiful setting, there's a restaurant on site, and it's literally 1/4 mile from transition area.
Just a thought.......
