I know CTC is supporting the Cleveland Triathon, but I haven't seen a thread for it on the "Race Connections" board. Is it OK if I start the thread?

I'm waffling on whether to do this. I've missed it for several years as it occurred on the same or one week removed from my hometown Pgh Triathlon. But that race has moved to Aug 6 this year, so I'm considering supporting my new hometown race again.

I'm doing the sprint distance. Jodi, I thought your first oly was going to be Great Lake Escape? Or, was I talking to a different Jodi???
Sounds like there will be tons of CTC members out there!

Commited to the swim leg for a relay team. It will be interesting to see if I can decrease my typical time when I don't have to save anything for the next 31 miles

I'll be making the decision after CDA. My wife wants to do the super sprint. I need to get her out in the lake and on the bike before she'll stop waffling too.

To Amy or whoever else might know......I was planning to mail in my registration and just list the code on my entry form and take off the appropriate amount. Does anyone know if that is OK or do we have to register online to get the discount??

I'm waffling, too. As most of you know, I'm a newbie. In a moment of insanity in January, I signed up for the Olympic distance. The next morning, I woke up and said, "What have I done?!?" Since then, I've been trying to decide whether to change my registration to the Sprint distance or to see if my training goes well enough that I'd be able to finish the Olympic distance in under 4 hours. (The time limit is because the finish line closes at noon.) From what I understand, Pacific Sports would let me change my registration as late as the Expo. Edited to add: I stopped waffling. I've changed my registration to the sprint race.

if you look at the results from last year: Olym: 137 M, 57F Sprint: 113M, 79F Super Sprint: 51M, 31F
So about 470 in total. I assume it will be about the same this year.

For those who don't like surprises:
I take the Shoreway to work every day. As of this morning, there was a bit of road off of which the top layer of concrete had been scraped, leaving a rough surface. Traveling from the west, it's just before the East 9th Street exit ramp, and I think it also goes up the ramp a bit.

I can see it from my office window. I suspect that they will have it paved by the time we race, which will make for a nice surface (it was ultra bumpy in that spot last year). If not, I'm sure the RDs will change the course. It won't be the first time. No worries. Jen

I asked the race director about the paving and that the bike course description said every lap turns on E.9th, but did not match the map visual which shows the downtown turnaroud on the Shoreway. It's been a couple years since I've done this race, so perhaps it's been this way for a while and others understand it. Does the bike travel the same way as traffic would now - several years ago it was opposite of the normal traffic flow? Also, how exactly does one turnaround "east of E. 9th Street on the Shoreway" with the concrete median? Jack's reply: The turnaround is actually east of E. 9th Street on the Shoreway. The only time the course is off the Shoreway is when you enter it from the transition area on E. 9th going east and exit it coming from the west at the end of the bike segment. I have not looked at the wording but it apparently needs updating. According to the Cleveland Police Dept., the repaving is supposed to be done by Friday. They were not even told that it was going to take place, so much for communications. We have a backup plan as always but expect not to use it.

Bikers only use the eastbound lanes now. We enter from E. 9th and the turnarounds are actually on the shoreway (can be a little tight) on both the west and east ends. When you are heading back from the west side, you go down the big hill and go underneath E. 9th street. The turnaround is not too far east of there. They have a big map at the expo.
I hope they repave soon. I don't even see anyone out there right now. But, it is good to know they have a backup plan.

On my way home from Edgewater Park last night, they had the eastbound lanes around the E. 9th exit closed off for resurfacing. The westbound lanes (which were already torn up) had some orange cones as well, so I would assume they got started on the repaving there too.

Here's what the East 9th Street area looked like this morning: If this picture isn't showing, that means I've exceeded my bandwidth on Geocities. Wait an hour and try again.

Don't worry. The RD knows about it and if the course needs to be changed, it will be. There is still plenty of shoreway left to ride on and if it is repaved on Friday, it will be a smooth, fun ride!

I'm sure the race director has a plan, so I'm not worrying about whether or not the race will take place on an acceptable surface. It's just that I like to know exactly what the course will be and the idea of an undisclosed "backup plan" is making me a bit nervous.
The first time I did this race, I walked the super-sprint run course twice before I ran it on Race Day. It was a good thing because there weren't enough people on the course to point the way. While running, I met some women who'd gotten lost and didn't know where the course was. I told them I knew where I was going, and we all jogged to the finish line together.
